Clients with depression, anxiety, trauma, work issues, family issues or self esteem issues.
Life can be stressful, overwhelming and confusing at times. It's as if you have this weight that is on your shoulders that does not seem to get any lighter. Therapy is a great way to unpack the load that you are carrying and help make life more manageable. Whether it's conflict with your children, spouse, co-workers or friends, or financial difficulties, or even the pressure you put on yourself, all of these concerns and more I address with my clients in therapy.

I believe that the key to change in psychotherapy is creating a safe environment in which you can explore the issues that brought you into therapy, and developing new ways of coping with them. This is facilitated by my focus on building a strong and mutually trusting therapeutic relationship. I utilize an insight-oriented approach when underlying factors are contributing to emotional pain, but I also use cognitive behavioral strategies, mindfulness/relaxation, and problem solving to help people find the right solutions for them.

You also avoid affection because you're worried it'll lead to more.
I help women go from dreading sex to actually wanting it without forcing it. It's not about pressing harder on the gas, it's about taking your foot off the brakes. Your sex drive isn't broken, it’s stuck. You'll understand what's blocking you, how to release it, and exactly how to enjoy yourself, so sex stops feeling like work and starts feeling good again.

I can talk all about my degrees and education and training but that's not what you care about, is it? You want someone who knows what it feels like to be where you are & to help you heal. You might be feeling "stuck in present pain" (that can be depression) or feeling " fear of future pain" (that can be anxiety). Both are my specialties. I know them well.

For over 25 years, I have supported oncology patients and families as they navigate the emotional and practical challenges of cancer. This work has shown me the profound strength people hold. I also help clients with anticipatory grief, bereavement, and adjusting to a new normal.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
