We are often told to “just get over it”. Although often well-intentioned, this saying is neither helpful or realistic. It is my firm belief that we don’t “get over” things, but we make meaning and learn to live with our experiences. As a certified EMDR therapist, I take pride in helping people do just that. Trauma impacts us all in unique ways and EMDR can help people achieve a variety of their personal goals related to healing, growth, and becoming “unstuck” from past experiences. From minor to major traumas, I am committed to helping you overcome your past and look forward to your future without fear and distress.

It can be easy to lose sight of who we are when faced with difficult life experiences and finding who we again can be challenging to navigate alone. I believe that when we discover who we are both in and outside of the context of our experiences, we develop the ability to better manage uncomfortable emotions, thoughts, and whatever else life throws at us. You no longer have to navigate this experience on your own!

I work with children and adolescents seeking therapeutic treatment for developmental disorders, anxiety, depression, and a history of trauma. The goal of treatment is to assist the child in actualizing their potential through a strengths-based approach to cognitive behavioral techniques. It's important that each child understands their worth and utilizes the tools learned in therapy in their daily lives. In addition to individual therapy, I am also able to offer diagnostic evaluations and psychological testing as a means to understand complex issues and formulate the most appropriate treatment plan for each individual.

Hello. I am a licensed social worker with extensive experience in treating those persons who have been dually diagnosed. At some point in life, most of us recognize the need for help. However, asking for help is not something that is valued too often today. My culturally competent style of therapy has been crafted to minimize the stigma of seeking behavioral health services.

My ideal client is aware of their issues and willing and able to work collaboratively to address them. They are open to ideas and building a therapeutic toolbox. They would practice the skills discussed in session in external settings and be able to share the results and obstacles encountered. Their issues are varied but their goal is to be a partner in their own recovery and mental health. As a result they would report decreased symptoms and a better quality of life.

Anxiety can be debilitating. You may find that you’re constantly worrying, on edge, or fearing that something bad might happen. You feel as if you can’t seem to get your mind to calm down, to take a break, to relax. You may feel badly about yourself, and notice you’re criticizing yourself more often. You might even become fearful of your anxiety, furthering this vicious cycle. Some might be able to pinpoint these feelings to something specific, while others may have a difficult time figuring out where this feeling came from, and why it won’t go away. Either way, anxiety leaves you feeling drained, exhausted, and out of control.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
