Therapy and the treatment of anxiety is challenging and ultimately highly rewarding work when clients receive relief from their symptoms. I value the balance of the interpersonal and relational components of the therapeutic relationship with the development of practical and evidence- based skills to achieve long lasting symptom reduction.

As a counselor, the majority of my work has focused on helping people navigate not only depression or anxiety, but also trauma, LGBTQ+ issues, neurodivergent issues (i.e. Autism Spectrum, ADHD), existential/spiritual concerns, and personal growth and development.
The clients I work with most often are those who struggle with "angst," or those who think deeply about life yet continue to struggle to find happiness or purpose in the modern world. In the first session, people working with me should expect that we will essentially just get to know each other. We may not start "therapy" in the first one or two sessions that we meet with each other, but I want to make sure I genuinely know you before diving into any type of therapy. It is ok if we don't get to the "deepest" or "hardest" moments of your life in our first session. I mostly want to know what you want out of therapy!

Your life is a garden; it needs attention and care! Therapy with me is a supportive, dedicated space where you develop into a skilled gardener who can cultivate the life you want. We will work together to figure out what are weeds that need to be thinned, and what flowers and crops you want to nurture. We will identify what tools, knowledge, and skills you need to grow your garden. We will navigate the barriers, internal and external, that have hindered your gardening efforts. Therapy can be hard work, but it can also be quite enjoyable, and you may be surprised by how much laughter can be involved!

Living as queer or trans can be difficult, daunting, or downright scary in today's world; the same can be said for folks with Autism, ADHD, or other neurotypes.
I specialize with folks who are neurodivergent or queer, especially those who've been hurt by a society that often ostracizes them. I blend existential and depth psychology perspectives in a neurodiversity-affirming framework, but I also know when to keep it real and focus on the aspects of everyday living.

I have a personal interest in working with Autism Spectrum, ADHD, and individuals who are part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Is it finally time to invest in yourself? There is so much pressure to be strong and handle everything on your own that we forget that we all need support. Asking for help in processing through these challenges shows the strength and courage needed to make real and meaningful changes. While I will always make sure to listen, be empathetic and supportive, I will also be direct and will challenge you to identify the patterns in your life that are contributing to your current distress. I will work collaboratively to help you identify and prioritize the values that are important to you and live more intentionally with these in mind.

I approach therapy with an anti-oppressive lens to assist clients dealing with the impacts of homophobia, transphobia, racism, ableism, and misogyny and am versed in supporting individuals with a wide range of challenges, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, ADHD, Autism, Bipolar, substance use concerns, and chronic pain.
When facing life stressors, we tend to focus on addressing the immediate symptoms. This can be very adaptive. However, if we only ever focus on the immediate symptoms of our struggles, then we may never recognize or have the possibility of healing the root cause of our pain. I believe that therapy provides a powerful space to explore, understand, and ultimately heal the root causes of our struggles. I approach my work with insight from a variety of therapeutic frameworks, including Narrative Therapy, IFS, Solution Focused Therapy, & Attachment Theory. I am also formally trained in EMDR which I can incorporate into therapy.

I specialize and am trained in anxiety and social anxiety, ASD in children, teens, and adults, depression, grief and loss, and exploring healthy relationships.
Sometimes it feels like anxiety is so overwhelming that it fills whatever space we give it--getting in the way of the things we want to do in life and affecting what we think we are capable of. If you feel like you are quietly suffering in the back seat when you'd rather be driving, there is hope. If you notice your child's true vibrant and independent nature paling when faced with scary new experiences, change, or social situations, we can work through this as a team. I believe change is possible through developing a meaningful relationship and emotional outlet, learning about the process and patterns of anxiety, and practice.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
