I’m a straight ally working with adolescents, young adults, and adults around depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, and pandemic-related issues. Even after more than 30 years, I remain deeply passionate about my work and continually humbled by my clients' resilience and innate strength. I especially enjoy working with young adults, women in transition, and queer or questioning folks. I encourage everyone to screen several therapists and choose the one with whom they feel most heard, respected, and safe. Please don’t settle for anything less.

In addition to treating substance use disorders, I treat a vast array of conditions in an eclectic therapeutic style, using cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, motivational interviewing, as well as principles from solution-focused therapy.
As an Addiction Social Worker, I specialize in empowering individuals to recover from addictive behaviors via support and counseling. With an extensive working knowledge of diverse recovery approaches, including family recovery, I feel privileged to help individuals with addiction and their families create change and enjoy productive, meaningful lives. As research shows, addicted individuals often struggle with additional challenges, such as trauma, grief, and mental health disorders and I recognize that quality treatment must be comprehensive to include treatment of these issues.

In practice since 2007, I work with those who experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief, have encountered trauma, engage in substance use, disordered eating, self-harming behaviors and relational conflict.
As a Licensed Professional Counselor, it is my goal in partnering with clients in navigating through life's twists and turns, being a guide towards a middle path of acceptance and change. My focus is to empower clients to transform coping strategies into skills of daily living, identify and release themselves from self-destructive patterns that led them to treatment, doing so in an environment that encourages growth and development.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I can be helpful to folks who are wrestling with anxiety, codependence, grief & loss, stress & anger management, mental health and substance use.
It takes a lot of Courage to seek help. For most, the journey begins when the struggle becomes overwhelming or unbearable. The Willingness to accept support & guidance usually does not come easy. I applaud anyone who does so. Basic human needs include survival, a sense of belonging, power, freedom and fun. When these elements are not in place or are out of balance, we can present as anxious, depressed, stressed out and angry. I work well with people who are wanting to gain clarity around imbalances, and who want to take action on making changes that align with, and help to maintain, personal integrity.

In working with clients my hope has always been to work with people who are asking for help. Working with people who struggle with mood disorders, relationship struggles, and those who simply want to get to know themselves better. Whether that is addressing self-esteem, purpose, addiction, helping others gain confidence or direction, my goal has always been to give people a better sense of who they are.

It can be hard to pin down what’s wrong. Life is can be challenging and sometimes we have difficulty seeing how to get back on track. This probably isn’t your first time considering therapy, but you’re hoping something changes this time. Let’s make that change together.

Fulfilling our potential is a lifelong journey of becoming more at peace with ourselves, deepening the intimacy in our relationships, being more authentically human, and feeling more alive each day. Along the way, certain challenges arise to cause us distress or confusion. Such moments can make us feel held back, afraid, or unsure of where to go from here. But these moments can also be the points of growth and healing from which we renew ourselves in ways we did not think possible.

I believe grief is a highly personal experience and is often not a linear process. To undergo the process alone can feel very isolating and unprocessed grief can hold us back from living. The dominant American culture often does not allow much space or permission to grieve. It often feels like nobody understands your loss. Not even your partner really understands, because they’re grieving in their own way. It hurts, possibly more than anything you have ever experienced. Life doesn’t seem fair right now and it’s hard to imagine moving forward.

My name is Dr. Jenna Mercadante. When working with individuals seeking treatment, I take a person-centered, holistic approach, focusing on the clients particular needs, preferences, and strengths and incorporating those into a practical & collaborative treatment plan. I see individuals as more than their psychiatric diagnosis, and thus, I seek to encourage personal growth & recovery (as opposed to only symptom reduction). In terms of treatment, I take a cognitive-behavioral therapeutic approach while incorporating mindfulness techniques. Mindfulness is simply intentional focusing, non-judgmentally, in the present moment.

Are you in emotional pain and ready for a change? Are anxiety, depression, self-defeating behavior or relationship issues standing between you and your happiness or personal goals? My aim is to help you begin healing as quickly as possible, even when the issues are long-standing. As a therapist, I am actively engaged in the process and collaborate to help you remove barriers and learn to use your innate capacities for growth. Together, we will explore the present and seek out transformational processes, rather than focus on the past or simply relive old wounds as a more traditional approach might.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
