Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, a difficult childhood, relationship issues, low self-esteem, or something else, change is possible. Therapy sessions begin with relationship building as you share the concerns that led you to therapy. informed approaches, along with other interventions, we’ll find what works best to get you re-engaged with the people and parts of your life that mean the most to you.
Sometimes life hands us more than we can deal with on our own; that’s why I became a therapist- to help people manage through difficult times so they can find a sense of safety & security to function at their best. Whether it's due to stress, anxiety, relationship/family challenges, or past emotional pain, we’ll work together to help you discover what you need to heal and grow. As a licensed therapist as well as a clinical supervisor of therapists, over the years, I’ve guided hundreds of individuals, couples, parents, and families in defining and connecting to the ideals, values, and relationships that made them feel whole again.

My name is Dr. Jenna Mercadante. When working with individuals seeking treatment, I take a person-centered, holistic approach, focusing on the clients particular needs, preferences, and strengths and incorporating those into a practical & collaborative treatment plan. I see individuals as more than their psychiatric diagnosis, and thus, I seek to encourage personal growth & recovery (as opposed to only symptom reduction). In terms of treatment, I take a cognitive-behavioral therapeutic approach while incorporating mindfulness techniques. Mindfulness is simply intentional focusing, non-judgmentally, in the present moment.

I specialize in attachment based relationship challenges and complex trauma. In addition to those specialities, I support clients who are challenged with depression, anxiety, general stress, and the emotional aspects of weight loss and challenges associated with weight loss. I encourage those I work with to think about all areas of wellness including: social, emotional, mental, & physical well-being. I believe it is necessary first to heal from harm done in the past and have an open mind for the future.

Need help adjusting to a life change? Choosing to seek help through psychotherapy is a positive and resourceful step toward having the life and relationships you desire. In my 20 years of practice I have had the privilege of partnering with parents who face the challenge of addressing at-risk behavior in their teen and young adult, the parents who have lost their child to substance abuse or suicide, the couples who find ways to reconnect, address intimacy issues and co-parent effectively, the college student who needs support, the teen who feels overwhelmed and the adult who experiences anxiety and depression.

Welcome to my practice. I specialize in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (IS-TDP). IS-TDP is based on findings from neuroscience, physiology, attachment studies, mindfulness and psychodynamic theory. This is an effective and well researched technique that is useful in addressing problems and difficulties rapidly and actively. Using this method we can get below the surface and address more than the symptoms but rather the cause. The results, typically, are broad in scope with health benefits in multiple areas. Of note, this method is effective in addressing physical symptoms unexplained by medical examination.

Therapy is learning about yourself and understanding what your triggers are, where they came from and how to best manage them. It's also about learning strategies that will help you cope with stressors specific to what is going on in your life. Whether you are looking for guidance with anxiety or depression, support in maintaining and managing a difficult relationship, tools to better manage your emotions, help with grieving a loss, confronting a fear or gaining insight, self awareness and confidence, you've found the right place and the results can be life changing.

We have the capacity to create new realities when we understand the nature of our own thoughts. Contemplative psychotherapy enables introspective awareness of mental processes and behavior and is a necessary pre-requisite for effective self-regulation. Consciousness of our own thoughts and the educational system that has formed us is the first step in orientating toward liberation.

In practice for over 15 years, I work with a wide range of people who may be experiencing anxiety, low mood, and stress. In particular, many people come into my office because they have found an aspect of their life is not rewarding, whether this be handling life's pressures, relationships with a spouse/children, or how one thinks about one's self. It is always my objective to work with people collaboratively in order to develop goals that guide the psychotherapy.

Emotionally Focused Therapists
Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.
Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.
What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.
What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
