Need help adjusting to a life change? Choosing to seek help through psychotherapy is a positive and resourceful step toward having the life and relationships you desire. In my 20 years of practice I have had the privilege of partnering with parents who face the challenge of addressing at-risk behavior in their teen and young adult, the parents who have lost their child to substance abuse or suicide, the
couples
who find ways to reconnect, address intimacy issues and co-parent effectively, the college student who needs support, the teen who feels overwhelmed and the adult who experiences anxiety and depression.

It is a privilege helping you to improve your
relationship
with yourself and others, to lessen the burden of emotional pain, or to embark on new life challenges.
Fulfilling our potential is a lifelong journey of becoming more at peace with ourselves, deepening the intimacy in our relationships, being more authentically human, and feeling more alive each day. Along the way, certain challenges arise to cause us distress or confusion. Such moments can make us feel held back, afraid, or unsure of where to go from here. But these moments can also be the points of growth and healing from which we renew ourselves in ways we did not think possible.

Are you in emotional pain and ready for a change? Are anxiety, depression, self-defeating behavior or
relationship
issues standing between you and your happiness or personal goals? My aim is to help you begin healing as quickly as possible, even when the issues are long-standing. As a therapist, I am actively engaged in the process and collaborate to help you remove barriers and learn to use your innate capacities for growth. Together, we will explore the present and seek out transformational processes, rather than focus on the past or simply relive old wounds as a more traditional approach might.

I value and appreciate the courage it takes to open up and talk to someone about the stress in your life,
relationship
difficulties, and day-to-day challenges. It is important to talk to someone who is nonjudgmental. I value the match between the therapist and the client and believe this fit is an essential component of therapy. I approach therapy as a collaboration in which client participation plays an integral role. I believe clients are capable of making meaningful changes in their lives based on their strengths. Our work together will build upon your existing strengths so that you can achieve your goals.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
