Stress can be psychologically toxic, even for helpers. Loss, trauma, injury/Illness anger, shame & fatigue can lead to anxiety and depression as well as relationship and behavior problems. Therapeutic relationships improve health by assisting with psychological detoxification and with the establishment of healthy emotional, interpersonal/social, mental, and physical habits to help inoculate against these "toxins." Sometimes natural healthy defenses against toxic stress break down and fail to protect us against painful or maladaptive feelings, thoughts, and beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world around us.

“Every difficulty in life presents us with an opportunity to turn inward and to invoke our own submerged inner resources. The trials we endure can and should introduce us to our strengths...Dig deeply. You possess strengths you might not realize you have. Find the right one. Use it.“ —Epictetus

Stating the obvious…life can be a full-blown, group-text-level hot mess. Whether you’re a teen on the emotional rollercoaster of school (with no seatbelt), an adult trying to balance anxiety and “responsible human-ing” (who approved this?), a couple having the same argument on a loop like it’s your favorite Spotify playlist, or someone carrying the heavy stuff, trauma, addiction, or just pain burnout you’re not alone. And the good news? You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through it by yourself. I’m definitely not the stereotypical nod-and-“mmhm” therapist who just stares thoughtfully while you spiral. Yes, I’m trained in EMDR.

Looking for change? Looking to find yourself or to find yourself again? I believe that it is through understanding the deeper reasons for some of our difficulties that we can create change. Because of this I primarily work from a psychodynamic orientation which focuses on the way past experiences impact our current life. I also utilize an interpersonal perspective focusing on how relationships influence our current state of being while also using DBT and CBT techniques to help support growth and change.

Going through life, what we experience is only a small percentage of what is happening to us and a large majority of how we perceive it. If you're experiencing a life transition, anxiety, depression, parenting stressors, relationship concerns, career difficulties or trauma, I can provide individual and/or couples therapy to help frame your thought process in a way that leads you to feeling like your best self. Sometimes all we need is to be validated in our feelings, other times we need challenged to see things a little differently. My goal is to figure out which works best for you so you are not facing these challenges alone.

I've had extensive training in EX/RP (Exposure Response Prevention) as well as ACT to treat a variety of anxiety disorders including OCD.
Research shows at least 1 in 5 people struggle with an anxiety disorder. Helping someone with anxiety or OCD has become a true passion of mine- or the "bread and butter" of my therapy skillset. I am a state licensed professional counselor drawn towards helping children and adults to be the best version of themselves. I primarily use a short term, problem solving approach also known as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but often use a "neapolitan" combination approach in working with people to tailor to their each individual needs.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
