After 30 years of working with infants, adults, adolescents and children, individuals, couples , groups and families, I have come to realize that my approach to each patient is very individualized.
I have been treating women for over 25 years who are experiencing feelings of depression and/or anxiety that sometimes coincide with lifestyle transitions, such as pregnancy, new motherhood, postpartum depression, miscarriage, infertility, menopause, relationship issues, divorce, PMS or returning to the work force. I work as a partnership in helping each woman to resolve issues in her life, in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. I feel that it's very important that your voice be heard. I can help you to find the relief that you deserve. I can help you feel like your "old self" again.

In addition to engaging in psychotherapy with individuals, couples and families, a significant component of my clinical expertise is in the assessment and treatment of child and adult ADHD, Autism Spectrum Conditions and Mood Disorders, as well as learning and behavioral issues in children.
As a Harvard trained psychologist, I work to use my education, experience, and passion for my profession to create a comfortable, caring enviroment for every individual I see. My initial focus is on understanding the unique ways in which each person thinks and feels about themselves and their life experiences. I then work with individuals to discover and change aspects of their thinking that have become ineffective; thoughts that lead to debilitating negative emotions or destructive behaviors. In every session I work to foster the open dialog and mutual respect needed to ensure a productive therapeutic relationship .

I provide intensive couples and family therapy using a variety of techniques to help individuals, couples and families recognize their impact on each other and collaboratively create sustainable healthy interactions and lifestyles.
I believe that all individuals are able to change but get stuck in patterns that do not serve them well due to daily stress. Changing these patterns is accomplished through interactive conversations and identifying why these patterns are not useful before creating new useful patterns. I work with couples on a variety of issues such as trust and betrayal, affairs, intimacy, grief, divorce, communication, addictions, and any of the myriad of relationship issues all couples experience. In addition, I work with children, youth and their families on a variety of relationship issues dealing with conflict, communication, parenting, defiance, adoption and respect.

Having a safe place of support and connection to unload burdens goes a long way. It is a gift to be in a therapeutic relationship with a client and would love to support you in this way.
I focus on helping clients identify and process issues causing them distress or discomfort so they feel more joy and strength in their lives. I provide an authentic, supportive experience where clients feel safe to work issues without judgment, while learning and practicing new coping skills and increasing their sense of self worth. Clients say they feel supported, and understood working with me. My focus extends to anxiety, depression, substance abuse, codependency, trauma and all types of work life issues. I find EMDR the most effective modality but shift based on client needs.

Healing is a process, but not one that needs to be done alone. We all encounter challenges, problems and stress that can impact us and often leave us wounded. Emotionally wounded that is. Anxiety can feel crushing and crippling. Depression can feel dark and lonely. Relationship problems can feel confusing and hopeless. Keeping up with the demands of life can be challenging with all the burdens that weigh us down or consume our hearts and minds.

Our lives are defined by our relationships. However, maintaining and nourishing these relationships can be a challenge. My goal as a therapist is to help families, individuals, and couples seeking to rejuvenate and rebuild relationships at all stages, whether you're experiencing marital difficulties, tensions with parenting, or managing relationships with elderly parents or children who have moved out of the house. In therapy sessions, I use a lighthearted touch and maintain a calm, safe environment that not only makes difficult moments tolerable but also encourages you to be reflective and self-aware.

I particularly enjoy working with women aged 20-40 who are working to overcome anxiety and depression or are coping with relationship dynamics. I believe most clients have a trauma history that shapes their mental health concerns, and helping them to process and heal from this history is vital to the client achieving a better quality of life. My ideal client will be seeking to learn new coping skills, communication strategies, or relationship skills.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
