Life is filled with times of transition and times of change. This couldn't be more true than for the life of a child or an adolescent. School stressors, personal identity, family separations, forming healthy friendships, and an overwhelming desire for acceptance are all things that a child or adolescent may deal with regularly. In these moments it is crucial for a young person to feel understood and listened to in order to be helped. Coming alongside a young person in whatever place they may be residing in is where my heart resides. Many times this age group can be overlooked or misunderstood, but their needs still remain.

I believe that all individuals are able to change but get stuck in patterns that do not serve them well due to daily stress. Changing these patterns is accomplished through interactive conversations and identifying why these patterns are not useful before creating new useful patterns. I work with couples on a variety of issues such as trust and betrayal, affairs, intimacy, grief, divorce, communication, addictions, and any of the myriad of relationship issues all couples experience. In addition, I work with children , youth and their families on a variety of relationship issues dealing with conflict, communication, parenting, defiance, adoption and respect.

In supervision, I like to share guidance based on my years of experience working with children and families in schools and mental health agencies, while also maintaining space for each social worker’s identity and unique viewpoints. It is important that you are able to feel heard and have your boundaries respected in order to promote longevity and enjoy your role in the field of social work. I want you to feel comfortable knowing that we will address your concerns and cope with any losses or setbacks, but we will absolutely laugh along the way, too.

In addition to engaging in psychotherapy with individuals, couples and families, a significant component of my clinical expertise is in the assessment and treatment of child and adult ADHD, Autism Spectrum Conditions and Mood Disorders, as well as learning and behavioral issues in children .
As a Harvard trained psychologist, I work to use my education, experience, and passion for my profession to create a comfortable, caring enviroment for every individual I see. My initial focus is on understanding the unique ways in which each person thinks and feels about themselves and their life experiences. I then work with individuals to discover and change aspects of their thinking that have become ineffective; thoughts that lead to debilitating negative emotions or destructive behaviors. In every session I work to foster the open dialog and mutual respect needed to ensure a productive therapeutic relationship.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
