I work with a diverse population of individuals and families in addressing abuse,
trauma
, and major life changes.
Hello my name is Cheryl Foxworth. I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AAMFT Approved Supervisor in Pennsylvania. For over 20-years I have worked with families in distress. I believe that most often the negative experiences we have in childhood corrupts our true sense of being. These early childhood issues often results in a disconnect with our true self. How tragic this can be but there is hope. I would love to think that "What does not kill us will only make us stronger. " This is a quote from philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche that has become my personal mantra. We must learn how to live beyond our hurt....

You woke up and you've decided that enough is enough, and you're ready to seek help. Today is the day. You may still be feeling nervous, or ready to lean in and get started, or both. People often find it difficult to take these first steps, and find a helpful support essential in the process as they address depression, anxiety, life transitions, grief, relationship difficulties, difficulties resulting from
trauma
, low self esteem, and general feelings of being lost. I'm here to walk with you as we work on and explore the areas you want to address in the verbal or creative ways that suit you.

I have extensive experience working with Mood Disorders,
Trauma
,
PTSD
, Anxiety Disorders, Mindfulness, Adjustment Disorders, and Personality Disorders.
I have over twenty years of experience working with people, 18-elders. I believe that therapy is an adventure, where one chooses to go, regardless of not knowing the way. Through the relationship this awareness is brought together by truth, compassion, humor, and some pain. The therapist serves as a guide, modeling and teaching the individual a more effective way of living. I see the individual as someone with a whole life that exists beyond the therapy session. The relationship, which fosters hope is a non-judgmental environment, that underlies all the work that is undertaken.

I am trained in EMDR, a highly-effective treatment for the lasting effects of traumatic experience, such as emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse, crime victimization, relational
trauma
, and much more.
I believe that we all possess an internal wisdom about what we need to overcome challenges. Difficult life experiences and learned behaviors sometimes cloud our ability to access this wisdom. Therapy with me begins with establishing a safe and trusting relationship which becomes the context in which we can explore and modify those parts of your experience that interfere with optimal functioning and which block your ability to feel deeply satisfied with your life.

I help individuals and couples work on
trauma
, psychological and relational issues and behaviors so that they can resolve them and enrich their lives. I have been a clinical psychologist since the mid-eighties and I view our work together as a collaborative process. I will begin by learning about and understanding you and your problem and we will figure out together what has contributed to your difficulties. The next step is to create a treatment plan tailored to you and your goal/s. Treatment consists of resolving these difficulties and re-accessing joy and interest in life.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
