Women have specific concerns and needs that can seem to change rapidly, such as mood and body image concerns during monthly cycles. Later on, Trying to Conceive (TTC), or the many emotions that come with Pregnancy, as well as Pregnancy losses and terminations, can be quite challenging and leave you feeling unsure who you can open up to without judgment and unsolicited advice. Birth Trauma, Postpartum Depression, and Anxiety can also feel quite scary and talking to a knowledgeable Therapist in Women 's Emotional Health can help you feel validated in your thoughts and fears, reduce guilt, and help you see that you are doing your best!

On the outside, you may look as if you have it all together, but on the inside, you may struggle with feelings of self-doubt, shame, and loneliness. I specialize in empowering teenage girls and women to be who they are and discover and accept their intrinsic value. Grounded in a climate of warmth and acceptance, clients explore feelings and identify thoughts and patterns that may be preventing them from getting what they want. I believe therapy works best as a creative partnership where clients discover their own wisdom, gain a sense of personal power and find a purposeful direction.

When people come to me, they're often carrying the weight of their obsessions, worries, burnout, trauma, and stress. Through our work together, my clients feel more unburdened in their lives and in their relationships with others. They learn to let go of their unhelpful narratives and behavior patterns, while they grow a more accepting and compassionate perspective towards themselves. As a woman of color, I am sensitive to the ways that identity and mental health impact each other. I take an action-oriented and direct approach, motivating you to take positive steps both in and outside of the therapy session.

Hello my name is Cheryl Foxworth. I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AAMFT Approved Supervisor in Pennsylvania. For over 20-years I have worked with families in distress. I believe that most often the negative experiences we have in childhood corrupts our true sense of being. These early childhood issues often results in a disconnect with our true self. How tragic this can be but there is hope. I would love to think that "What does not kill us will only make us stronger. " This is a quote from philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche that has become my personal mantra. We must learn how to live beyond our hurt....

Life can be overwhelming and draining. Especially when you are grieving the loss of a part of yourself or a loved one who has died. We grieve the loss of relationships, friendships, people, and experiences. Please know that grief has no time limit; you just need to learn how to live in a new way. Life will not always be easy, but it may become easier. Traumatic experiences effect people in different ways throughout their lives. Now is the time to reach out if you suffered a trauma and are looking to process how that trauma may now be affecting you. Lastly, families go through changes and each transition requires a new set of skills.

I have practiced in a variety of settings including inpatient medical, residential, and psychiatric facilities; outpatient mental health, eating disorder, behavioral medicine, women 's health, and parenting center programs; and private practice.
I am a clinical psychologist, parenting coach, and workshop leader, in practice for over 35 years. I am also a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Therapy works best as a collaborative relationship between therapist and client - a process that encourages personal growth, behavioral changes, and self-awareness. While offering my experience and perspective, I encourage an interactive, respectful, and engaged therapy process. I am currently offering individual, couples, and family therapy through teletherapy throughout PA and in PSYPACT authorized states.

I have over twenty years of experience working with people, 18-elders. I believe that therapy is an adventure, where one chooses to go, regardless of not knowing the way. Through the relationship this awareness is brought together by truth, compassion, humor, and some pain. The therapist serves as a guide, modeling and teaching the individual a more effective way of living. I see the individual as someone with a whole life that exists beyond the therapy session. The relationship, which fosters hope is a non-judgmental environment, that underlies all the work that is undertaken.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
