A supportive, respectful, and trusting
relationship
between you and your therapist is the most important element in the effectiveness of therapy. I offer an alternative to large, impersonal mental health settings, and a personalized approach that encompasses current evidence-based and traditional treatment. I work primarily with individuals and
couples
who are struggling with life's difficulties. My personal specialties include
relationship
issues, anxiety, depression and grieving. My book, Loving Someone with Asperger's Syndrome: Understanding and Connecting with Your
Partner
, was released in 2012.

I take a cognitive behavioral approach to helping my clients gain personal insight and to make behavioral changes. Depression, anxiety, and
relationship
issues can interfere with problem solving. Together we can explore options, develop problem solving techniques, and coping mechanisms that will help you feel more in control of your self and your situation. My style is informal and relaxed. Ideal clients are those that are committed to making changes and who are willing to fully participate in the therapeutic
relationship
.

I help clients make concrete behavior changes for steady improvement, and also
partner
with you to build lasting life insight.
(NOTE: I now accept insurance through Headway.co for clients in New York State ONLY -- If that changes for clients in other states, I will update here). How we think about our history, experiences, and relationships can center us, or can throw us off-balance and cause us to get stuck. I help clients examine how they are spending their time and energy and help them to make manageable change in line with their values. As we work together, we will uncover what it is you value -- what is important to you. We will work together to make shifts to increase happiness and lead to greater connectedness and clarity.

Working with women(and
partner
)around pregnancy terminations are also a specialty of mine.
Women have specific concerns and needs that can seem to change rapidly, such as mood and body image concerns during monthly cycles. Later on, Trying to Conceive (TTC), or the many emotions that come with Pregnancy, as well as Pregnancy losses and terminations, can be quite challenging and leave you feeling unsure who you can open up to without judgment and unsolicited advice. Birth Trauma, Postpartum Depression, and Anxiety can also feel quite scary and talking to a knowledgeable Therapist in Women's Emotional Health can help you feel validated in your thoughts and fears, reduce guilt, and help you see that you are doing your best!

I have over twenty years of experience working with people, 18-elders. I believe that therapy is an adventure, where one chooses to go, regardless of not knowing the way. Through the
relationship
this awareness is brought together by truth, compassion, humor, and some pain. The therapist serves as a guide, modeling and teaching the individual a more effective way of living. I see the individual as someone with a whole life that exists beyond the therapy session. The
relationship
, which fosters hope is a non-judgmental environment, that underlies all the work that is undertaken.

relationship
between parent and child through enhanced familial communication. My intent is to enhance your child's level of motivation, increase academic achievement, increase their level of comfort within social environments, and strengthen relationships with friends and family. My intent is to empower children. I see children and parents as co-collaborators in treatment. Therapy offers new resources and can give children and families new skills and perspectives to improve the quality of their daily life and their relationships.

Therapy to me is a gift we give ourselves; an invaluable tool that enables us to enhance and make sense of our lives. It can help us find comfort and clarity during times of uncertainty. I believe in human beings' innate ability to create, know and love our lives and ourselves. Together my clients and I forge a
relationship
outside the context of their family or loved ones for the purpose of support, exploration and self-understanding. Our vehicle is creativity that helps us stay open to possibility in the face of even the most challenging of circumstances.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
