You are brave for being here. You have done your best as a parent, and yet your
child
is still struggling. It hurts to see them beating themselves down, and selling themselves short when you know who they are at their best. You've heard them say "I'm not good enough," "no one understands me," or "things would be better if I weren't here." Maybe they've turned to self harm to manage their emotions. You want to protect them, help them heal, and show them the beauty you see when you look at them.

As human beings, we are capable of deep healing and change in a loving environment. Even more so,
children
are capable of creating change in a way that helps the whole family heal. Most times,
children
tend to take on the unhealed pain of the family. In that way,
children
act as the gateway for growth within the family system. In working with your
child
, I work with your entire family to address root causes of depression, anxiety and behavioral issues that you
child
is presenting with. Together, we create a deeper connection for your entire family.

I root my approach in current research on the science of the
child
's developing brain and the impact of relationships and social-cultural factors on the development of a
child
's ability to regulate emotions.
I specialize in working with
children
and adolescents ages 2 and up. I treat symptoms such as: separation-anxiety,enuresis/encopresis, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress-disorder, oppositional and disruptive behavior, attention deficits, school resistance, poor academic performance, difficulty with peer relations, gender dysphoria and conflicts around sexual orientation.
While I work with
children
individually, I also regularly involve parents. I aim to position myself as a support person for everyone in the family, particularly parents, knowing that the emotional well-being of
children
is entwined with the emotional well-being of the people who care for them.

I specialize in psychodynamic psychotherapy with
children
, adolescents and adults.
I believe that most personal problems have developed over time and need careful and systematic exploration in order to be understood and modified. This calls for a conjoint effort in which both therapist and client collaborate to expand understanding. In my practice this occurs as a trusting, meaningful relationship develops, making it possible for me to develop a thorough understanding which I can then share with my client. I believe that symptoms are indications of underlying issues of which most people are only partially aware. As the therapy brings there issues into conscious awareness they can be effectively addressed.

I do not have a single "specialty" and work with school-age
children
through seniors.
In my 41 years of post-doctoral experience I've learned to draw from psychodynamic, family systems, and cognitive behavioral approaches so that I can be most effective. My thinking has always been integrative and that has prevented me from taking a "one size fits all" approach to therapy. Over the years it has become clear to me that there are two essential ingredients in helping people change; establishing a strong, real working alliance built on mutual trust, and altering the person's perceptions of themselves and the world around them.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
