I see a wide range of clients, from children to adults, for a variety of reasons such as: anxiety, depression, relationship problems, identity concerns, gender and sexuality, self-esteem, family dynamics, and major life transitions.
“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable” - Fred Rogers Sometimes we all need someone to help process through every day struggles, whether it be struggles with relationships, identity, work, or school. I work primarily from a cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered and dialectical behavioral therapy approach and work to figure out the “why” behind emotions, help build awareness to emotions, reframe faulty thinking and find positive solutions to every day problems.

One of my working assumptions is that you truly matter (just as you are), and I hope you feel appropriately supported in working toward and realizing your goals (who you're becoming). My approach is collaborative, authentic, and eclectic; incorporates a holistic view; is tailored to your strengths and current needs; includes asking tough questions, humor, and direct communication; and invites (optional) "therapy homework" between sessions. This style is not for everyone, yet I hear time and again that those open to working together experience amazing transformation and deep healing.

If you're someone who has always been the one to "figure it out," you're not alone. Maybe you're the dependable one, the problem-solver, or the person everyone turns to when things get hard. You're used to handling things yourself, pushing through and convincing yourself that asking for help can wait, until one day, it all becomes too much. That's often the people I work with. They aren't weak or incapable, they've simply spent so much time carrying the weight of work, relationships, family or expectations that they've forgotten they deserve support too.

I work with those struggling with relational issues, anxiety, depression, trauma, LGBT, health/cancer, grief, divorce/separation, parenting issues, and mood disorders.
I'm trained in DBT, an evidenced based treatment. DBT can increase awareness through "mindfulness" (reduce racing thoughts), enhance interpersonal skills (setting healthy boundaries), increase a person's ability to control their emotions (stop acting out impulsively), and distress tolerance skills (when feeling like we've reached our limit).

EMDR can be helpful for individuals who feel stuck in patterns related to past experiences, anxiety, trauma, or negative self-beliefs and are looking for a different approach to healing and growth.
You may have learned to shape yourself around outside expectations and are now wanting to feel more like yourself, more grounded, free, and authentic. Maybe you want stronger relationships, a clearer sense of who you are, and a life guided by your values rather than imposed rules. Whether you’re questioning parts of your identity, redefining your path, or processing challenging personal or cultural experiences, we will work to examine different parts of your story and how they show up in your relationships and daily life.

As a Counseling Psychologist I work with individuals who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, life transitions and stressors (such as grief, infertility, college student/school stress), and relationship distress.
We all go through stressful periods in our lives. Sometimes it's a result of a traumatic event, such as a sexual assault, loss of a loved one, or difficult life transition. Sometimes it's more complicated to pinpoint. Maybe we are having trouble coping with school, work, or everyday life and are not sure why. Maybe we feel stuck and just feel "off" or not ourselves. I believe that everyone is capable of changing their life and moving toward happiness. Whether you are new to therapy or have gone in the past, I'll work with you with non-judgment and compassion to help to you on your journey of personal growth.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
