My areas of specialty are Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Perfectionism, Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (skin-picking and hair pulling disorders), Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety and Depression.
My clients are often struggling to manage symptoms of anxiety: over-thinking, self-doubt, reassurance seeking behaviors, situational avoidance, perfectionism, and hypervigilance among others. These stressors often have external consequences: difficulty feeling comfortable in social spaces or relationships, functioning at work or school, and meeting our needs for rest/sleep/nutrition. I enjoy working with clients to relieve suffering in these areas, exploring significant lived experiences, and connecting to deeper understanding our selves.

Life can bring unhappiness, distress, and uncertainty. It can also bring opportunities for satisfaction, connection with others, and meaning. To realize that something in your life needs to change and to seek support in doing so takes courage. The support of a well-trained, compassionate, and supportive therapist can provide needed comfort and security—whether to provide support during a stressful period, to address deeper issues in forming and improving relationships, to adjust to a loss or life transition, or simply because you know that you’re unhappy and are uncertain how to change.

I have focused on developing an expertise in technology addiction; including the internet, cell phones, and video games. I work with clients of all genders from early adolescence through adulthood. Additional presenting issues that I often treat include depression, loss, trauma, and anxiety. These may be episodic manifestations of the symptom, or part of a larger personality, autistic, or adjustment disorder. These clients typically are looking for support and the chance to explore their feelings and experiences in a way that enhances their self-understanding and self-efficacy.

The process of finding a psychologist who is a good fit for either yourself or a family member can be overwhelming and frustrating. I make it a point to ensure that clients who reach out to me feel heard and understood. Therapy can only be effective if it is a collaborative process in which clients feel they have a say in their own treatment. I mainly practice from a cognitive-behavioral perspective (CBT), but I also use other modalities in sessions in order to best meet the needs of my clients.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
