I have enjoyed clinical social work with adolescents and adults for about 25 years in a variety of settings. I will support your journey of self discovery and growth with curiosity and humility coupled with training and experience. Attachment theory, science, attention to the intersection of multiple identities with emphasis on the relationship between myself and clients grounds my practice. I believe healing occurs in relationships. I create a safe, supportive environment in which you can unpack and explore your feelings and needs to create the live you want and deserve. Provide LCSW supervision as well.

What is your story? It's common to have a running narrative about who you are in this world. We use certain words to describe ourselves, like “I’m shy.” “I’m an anxious person.” “I’m bad at dating.” While these stories are based on real experiences, they can also hold power over our self-esteem, our decision-making, and our relationships. I too have suffered from a limiting self-concept. I even traveled the world on solo backpacking trips in an effort to "find myself." What I came home with was the firm belief that the seed of change lies in self-acceptance.

My approach involves bringing change about from the inside out. We will work towards understanding how the problems that brought you here developed, what they mean, and the purpose that they serve. This approach goes beyond simply treating symptoms and strives to help you make changes that are deeply-rooted and long-lasting. It has been proven that the therapeutic relationship actually creates healthier connections in your brain. In younger children this deeper type of therapeutic change is often accomplished through therapeutic play. Play is the natural language of children and allows them to express their thoughts and feelings.

Creating a collaborative, warm, trusting and empathic relationship with my clients is my strongest value. I work with adults and adolescents who may be looking to build a more meaningful connection with themselves and others, or are experiencing anxiety, depression, challenges with their relationships, stress and burnout, or who want to explore identity or life transitions. I see those I work with as the agents of their growth process and the expert on what is best for them. I utilize relational, client-centered, emotion-focused, cognitive-behavioral, and narrative approaches based on each person's needs, preferences, and goals.

Grief sucks… But you don’t have to do it alone. If you're struggling to cope with grief, I can help you navigate these feelings and offer support and strategies to process and integrate your experience. Not to move on, but to move with. Grief is both universal AND incredibly difficult. Loss is interwoven into so many of life’s challenging experiences, not only in death, but break-ups, job transitions, growth in our gender and identity, estrangement, and more. They’re all open for discussion in our time together.

Do you feel stagnant or stuck? Feeling lost, overwhelmed, unfulfilled, or isolated? Do you find yourself repeating the same behaviors, even though you know they are not helping you get to where you want to be? You want things to be different with your entire being, but for whatever reason just cant seem to get there. You've turned to addictive behaviors or developed an unhealthy relationship with food to cope. Self sabotage and self criticism turns into a vicious cycle. You have tried therapy before, but didn't feel like you got what you needed because you were listened to but not challenged or pushed out of your comfort zone.

I have extensive experience working with individuals and couples who are seeking relief from pain, suffering and confusion. I work best with folks hoping to be part of process leading to a quick resolution. Once initial concerns are addressed, I find working with someone interested in additional explorations into the root of their issues, very rewarding.

Life can bring great pain, trouble, and uncertainty. It can also bring opportunities for satisfaction, connection with others, and meaning. Realizing that something in your life needs to change and seeking support to do so takes courage. Seeking the support of a well-trained, compassionate, and supportive therapist can be helpful—whether you need support during a stressful period, to address broader issues in forming and improving relationships, in adjusting to a loss or life transition—or simply because you know that you’re unhappy and are uncertain how to change.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
