Do you find yourself questioning things about yourself or wondering what is holding you back? We all have things we "could" be working on, but curiosity and action about your own life is the first step! I love meeting with people who want to improve their lives and it takes courage to admit when something is "off." My approach is eclectic and I'm passionate about reducing the stigma of therapy and making it an inclusive experience for growth and change.

Recovering from an eating disorder and/or severe trauma can frequently be difficult. My broad training and extensive experience enables me to work with patients in a variety of ways including traditional therapeutic approaches, the incorporation of art therapy as a component of treatment, and the use of EMDR. I work with each individual patient to determine the type of approach that best matches her personality and therapeutic needs. I have been one of the first psychotherapists to make use of expressive arts and EMDR in the treatment of eating disorders.

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. Recent years have been a mental health challenge. If you're anxious, overwhelmed, fatigued, you are not alone. Stress is a normal response, and you can't self-care your way out of oppressive circumstances. Times may feel more hopeful, but it doesn't always erase the accumulated stress and grief of grievous events. Your survival and stability are important: you deserve to live. This world is for you just as much as it is for anyone! We can find ways to reduce your stress and help you feel more anchored, stable, and hopeful.

Do you feel like your life isn't quite where you imagined it would be? You're not alone. Many of us long for deeper connection, a sense of peace and satisfaction, but struggle to achieve this. Together, we’ll explore what maybe holding you back. I help adults navigate relationships with emotionally immature parents/adults and life transitions (e.g. college/post grad, perimenopause/menopause, caregiver for parents).

I’m not your “just nod and validate everything” therapist. I have a B.S. from Penn State and an M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Children, Adolescents, and Trauma) from Lock Haven—but more importantly, I meet you where you are, not where you “should” be. I use person-centered and parts work, but I’m flexible and tailor therapy to what actually works for you. I love working with teens and young adults, but if you’ve got a brain and feelings, we’ll get along! I’m direct, I use humor, and I’ll call you out (with care). I’m here to help you grow—even when it’s uncomfortable.

You don’t have to have it all figured out to deserve support. Maybe you’re the high-achiever who looks successful on the outside but quietly battles perfectionism, burnout, anxiety, or the fear of “not being good enough.” Maybe you’re a new mom trying to recognize yourself in the mirror again. Maybe you’re navigating the intensity of college, medical school, law school, career uncertainty, relationship stress, or a major life transition that’s left you feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. Therapy can be a place where you finally exhale.

Do you feel like you're carrying the weight of everyone else's needs while losing touch with your own? Perhaps you're overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, & the pressure of trying to do it all, yet still tell yourself you should be able to handle it. On the outside, you appear capable & successful. On the inside, you feel exhausted, disconnected from yourself, & unsure of what you truly want. Many of the women I work with have spent years caring for others, meeting responsibilities, & doing what they believed they were supposed to do. They feel stuck in survival mode, constantly giving to others while putting their own wants last.

Women's Issues Therapists
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
