Currently, I am only accepting new couples for therapy. I am open to working with all couples: gay, lesbian, straight, alternative lifestyles. I work with couples that are dating, living together, considering marriage or married. I mostly use EFT , IMAGO and the Gottman method to help couples improve communication skills, work on conflict resolution, recover from infidelity, increase or rediscover intimacy or simply improve the overall quality of your relationship. In addition to working with couples that are seeking to improve their relationship, I also assist with separation and divorce counseling.

I enjoy working with clients with a wide range of backgrounds, presenting problems, and personality styles. Whether it is a child who is starting to show some signs of struggling with behavior, mood, or school performance, to adults who feel a sense that something is missing for most of their lives, to people impacted by the pandemic or traumatized in other ways. Coming to therapy is a difficult decision for many, and helping individuals manage the initial anxieties and hesitations is probably one of the most important parts of the work; developing a strong therapeutic relationship is a key way to navigate these normal reactions.

After asking your teenager countless times to clean their room, you walk in to see them playing video games with their dirty socks all over the floor! Now you’re seeing red. You’re either giving in to their bad behavior, snapping in frustration, and then feeling guilty about it. You know your kid needs extra support. His teachers have been throwing around “ADHD” as a diagnosis, but no one has any helpful advice. You’re in over your head. The habits he learns now will affect the rest of his life, and you feel like you’re failing him as a parent. You want what’s best for your child, but this feels like more than you can handle alone.

Every person has the ability to tap into their potential and recognize that they are a unique gift to the world. Many of my clients have not been aware that they can learn self-control, problem solving, courage, spiritual serenity, and find joy in life. They may be held back by internalized negative beliefs about themselves and others. We all need to be heard, validated, challenged, and supported as we take the next step. I love to help people find balance in their lives, and build healthy relationships. Depending on the needs of the client, I may use worksheets, visual aids, bibliotherapy, therapy games, play therapy techniques.

Step one: Look for a therapist. This can feel like quite an undertaking. "What am I looking for?" "Will I be able to open up and be comfortable with a stranger?" These are great questions and to help you answer them I can share a little about myself and the relationship I would like to build with you. When we meet, my goal is to have you feel as though you are talking with a friend. Sometimes we laugh or cry and curse but it is always about being genuine and authentically ourselves. There is no perfect recipe for the relationship between you and I. Our work focuses on connection with the addition of coping skills and acceptance.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
