Life is full of changes. While any change can be trying and stressful, some are harder on us than others. The
death
of a loved one, a traumatic health event, diagnosis of a chronic disease, ending of a relationship, these can be especially challenging and really rock our sense of safety and well-being. These changes can lead us to feeling lost, anxious, sad, angry, or just plain "stuck".

I'm currently accepting new clients that desire to heal their trauma or
grief
. Have you experienced a life shattering event that changed the way you looked at yourself? Trauma impacts us in many ways & makes us feel disconnected from who we truly are and what we really want out of our lives. The World Health Organization recommends EMDR therapy as an effective treatment for trauma. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that uses bilateral stimulation to process traumatic events in a more adaptive manner & can alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress, anxiety, & other mental health conditions.

I will be most successful in treating a client who is having difficulty with emotions--such as anxiety, depression, anger,
grief
--and who is willing to make a commitment to work on changing thinking patterns, behavioral patterns and emotional patterns that are causing misery and distress. This potentially successful client will not just be talking about problems each session, he or she will be learning, practicing and applying new skills. If my client needs medication, I will arrange a medication evaluation by our nurse practitioner, but mainly we will focus on skills, not pills!

Life can be hard to navigate at times. I believe we can feel this way at any age; a child experiencing anxiety due to a tough divorce, a teenager coping with abuse, or an adult trying to move forward from past trauma that's keeping them stuck. I can help with that. I have over 18 years of experience and knowledge as a therapist. Much of my work focuses on assisting kids and families through difficult times, whatever their situation may be. I work with any issue that you feel is holding you up in life. My firm belief is that while therapy can be difficult, it can also be a pleasant and satisfying experience.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
