I especially like helping people with anxiety and trauma; I understand how these issues impact our daily lives and impede our ability to trust others and love ourselves.
Feeling anxious or depressed? Having trouble in school? Are traumatic experiences continuing to hurt you? I am especially adept at understanding the complexities of problems impacting us and working collaboratively to make things better. I am supportive and non-judgmental but will call you out when I think you’re getting in your own way. Having worked as a director of counseling services/dean in higher education for many years, I have special expertise in working with college students and young adults. I offer virtual services but also maintain a comfortable and private office for those wanting to meet in person.

MY PRIVATE PRACTICE IS CURRENTLY FULL. My specialty is coming alongside clients who experience overwhelming anxiety in everyday life situations and helping them learn new ways to approach and defuse the anxiety they experience. I also work with clients with OCD, PTSD, fear of flying, and other life challenges. I see adults and children (11 years and older preferred). When working with children and young adults, I generally use a systems-oriented approach, as I believe you cannot separate a child from the family and environment in which they function. Clients of all gender/ sexual orientation are welcome.

Learning to live in the present allows us to experience the beauty that surrounds us, both from within and from the outside world. Anxiety , depression, and unresolved experiences keep us from connecting with ourselves and others, and we end up living life on autopilot. It can be difficult to slow down our thoughts and regulate our emotions and we miss out on all the joy that can be part of our life. We will work on healing from the past, practicing healthier coping skills, learning new tools to manage challenges, and adopting healthier thought patterns. Meditation and grounding exercises are often used in sessions.

When people come for therapy, they are feeling uncomfortable. Usually, they are experiencing feelings such as depression, anxiety , or anger. The source of those feelings lies in how they think about themselves or in how they cope with problems in their lives. So, change involves learning new thoughts and behavior. People need to learn self-enhancing ways to think about themselves and what happens to them. They need to change their behavior in order to better meet the challenges of life.

Utilizing multiple theoretical structures, as well as a holistic approach, my goal is to offer each individual validation as well as guidance toward a shift in either perspective or behavior. This process involves identifying perceptual, emotional, and spiritual barriers and nurturing inner resources. I see the counseling process as the exploration of both our past and current reality as well as what is needed to help us grow into a whole, healthy individual. I have extensive knowledge of family and relationship dynamics, treating adult survivors of abuse, depression and anxiety , the addictions field, and pain management.

We all get stuck sometimes, whether it be with making an important decision or simply in unhealthy thought and behavioral patterns. I enjoy helping individuals, couples and families recognize unhelpful patterns and work towards becoming "unstuck." People often bear the symptoms of what is going on around them and these symptoms become visible as depression, anxiety , etc. I enjoy helping individuals, couples and families to become the best that they can be and to have the best relationships that they can have.

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I believe that our challenges and strengths emerge from a combination of our personality, biology, family upbringing, environment, stage of life, and current relationships. My goal as a therapist is to help individuals, couples, and families make sense of these influences and understand the context that affects them. My second goal is to support my clients in making the changes they want within this context. I collaborate with my clients to find what works for them in therapy be it validation, challenge, comfort, support, guidance, or a good laugh.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
