As an individual and couples therapist and a
parenting
coach for over 25 years, I am very experienced at working with clients in crisis. Often a marriage is in trouble or just not enough. Parents are trying hard to be the best parents they can be, but not succeeding. Individuals can be stuck, overwhelmed, confused or feel hopeless. The habituated way we cope often causes us great suffering and prevents us from enjoying our lives.

You’re wondering why you feel this way; why you can’t just relax and enjoy your life. You want to get over it, get past it, let it go. Maybe you ask yourself why you can't just make yourself do the things you should be doing. It is disheartening, frustrating, sometimes paralyzing. You struggle with stress, anxiety, panic, OCD, chronic pain, or are having difficulty with life transitions (school/work changes, grief, divorce, empty nesting),
parenting
and relationship issues; feeling lonely, isolated and disconnected from who and what you care about most. If any of this sounds familiar, I can help.

Connections are important, especially when it comes to your therapist. Whether this is your first time working with a therapist or you've been trying to find a therapist you connect with, you're already half way there! Sometimes talking to friends or family members just isn't enough, especially if the closest people in your life are the hardest to get along with/primary cause of your stress. Or perhaps you're not sure why you're stressed, anxious, depressed, having communication difficulties and need someone to help you untangle some things. What's for certain, is that unless you try something new, things will stay the same.

Your gifted child, adolescent or young adult is distracted by worries. They attend an elite school where they’re adored by teachers and friends. They are sensitive in the best way, with a mind that is curious and a heart that wants to take care of those around them. But they’ve also just had a panic attack, which has you a little frazzled. This isn't like them. You're not sure what this means or how to help. You just want to know they’re OK.

For over 35 years, I have helped people of all ages to ease their burdens, face doubt and overcome emotional afflictions with warmth, empathy, and safety. I believe compassion is the cornerstone of a trusting relationship. More recently I have been guiding people to happier, more meaningful lives and relationships by focusing on their often unrealized strengths to facilitate change, have them live more consciously, and become who they want to be.

Parenting Therapists
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.
When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.
How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
