My practice works with men,
women
and other therapists who identify with challenging childhoods and who are now experiencing distress in their lives and relationships.
When you look back at your childhood, you may have questions. You might wonder how your childhood experiences and family dynamics impact you and your relationships today. Feelings of disconnection, anger, anxiety or sadness may be what brought you to my page, but there is a need to understand more about your life and why you may feel this way. What could be different? Examining and understanding our histories unlocks needed shifts for the present. I can support you with this self discovery process and can guide you in making the changes needed to foster healthier patterns in your work, relationships and overall life.

My ability to connect with adolescents, young
women
, and their families is what sets me apart from other providers.
If you’re a parent of an adolescent struggling with mental health, know that you don’t have to manage these struggles alone. Feeling helpless about not knowing another way to deal with your child’s presenting problems is difficult. But I'm here to tell you that there is no “wrong” way to parent your child with mental health challenges. I can help both you and your beloved adolescent connect, build resiliency, and manage developmental challenges. We’ll work on communication and improving interactions between you and your child, and I will support you in making informed decisions about your adolescent’s mental health.

I believe that a young
woman
with a strong sense of self will have the ability to live her happiest and truest life and can make a lasting impact on society at large.
The teenage years are the most vulnerable, exciting, and growing years of a young person’s life. Self discovery can often yield low self esteem, independence can easily shift to rebellion, and a slow maturation process often creates impulsive decision making. And when a parent’s warnings and worries don’t seem to have an impact on the teenager’s course, or when it feels too heavy to carry alone, it’s helpful to have another guiding force to help. Through counseling, an adolescent can feel understood, begin to understand themselves, and learn to understand and accept their role in the family and society.

I am a licensed therapist who sees individuals with mental health and/or substance use issues. When I began studying social work its philosophy resonated deeply with me as strengths-based with dignity for all. Social justice issues have recently been occupying a more prominent (long overdue) role in many conversations; I support the dismantling of systems of oppression in its many forms, and am supportive to clients if they choose to engage with these topics, whether or not they wish to bring them to the therapy space.

Psychotherapy can bring light to darkness, hope to fear, and empowerment to stuck-places that weigh on us. I understand my role as your therapist as being a co-journeyer in your path through healing into a healthier, fulfilling life. My style focuses on reflective-empathetic listening to promote self-acceptance and awareness; cognitive flexibility and experimenting with new choices; and the affirmation of strengths. I have specialized experience with eating disorders, body image (HAES), and the effect of loved ones' addictions/alcoholism. I also value how culture, class, education, and power differences affect close relationships.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
