I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) experienced in working with individuals suffering from depression,
anxiety
, grief/loss, trauma, relationship issues, life change, and coping with environmental stress.
I will work with you to resolve areas where you may feel misunderstood, confused, or stuck. Studies have shown that we are able to change throughout our lifespan. This means we do not have to be stuck living the same way forever. My approach is psychodynamic psychotherapy where two people work together to understand what is contributing to one’s suffering and to find a path forward, toward recovery. I enjoy working with adults and adolescents looking for a change and a way to experience happiness in life.

My focus areas are treating
anxiety
, anger, post-traumatic stress, and sexual addiction including excessive pornography use.
In early life, we memorize the safest passages through difficult terrain and later repeat the same emotional trails throughout our lifespans. It's no wonder that as adults, it can seem that while time passes and the outer world changes, parts of the inner self seem stuck in the past. For all the growth and development that we achieve, our yearnings, unsatiated desires, wounds, or constricting patterns of avoidance or withdrawal may seem unchanged.

You have been told you are too sensitive and were constantly invalidated for how you feel. People in your life have made you feel unworthy or less than your value. You're a feeler and feeler’s care, deeply. Your emotions have felt too overwhelming to acknowledge, so you try to ignore them, but they spill over into your daily life. You become triggered and have difficulty managing those emotions when they come to the surface. If you are feeling the ripple effects of past trauma or experience intense emotions such as shame, sadness, low self-esteem, anger, or
anxiety
, I know how to help!

Sometimes our child has needs that can effect the entire family system. I focus on providing the child direct care, and provide parents the support to keep going, to keep working toward the potential you know your child has. Specifically, if your child is having ongoing school problems, is showing oppositional behavior, or has difficulty maintaining friendships. Additionally, if your child has been diagnosed, or your questioning whether your child has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD, AD/HD) and needs "coaching" to cope with this problem, or he/she is showing signs of
anxiety
or depression, or abusing alcohol or drugs.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
