As a parent , you hear advice from everyone and have likely tried a number of strategies. But, at the heart of these struggles, you don't want to lose sight of the connection with your child and all of the positive aspects about them. You want an "inside-out" approach to maintain your child's spirit and personality while tackling outward behaviors caused by anxiety, depression, transitions, trauma or hyperactivity.

Ongoing scholarship informs my work, as does being a modern parent – a station ever refining my facility for connection, my attunement to tender spots all possess.
Parents can hold shame, self-reproach, frustration, and helplessness over a child’s distress; children fear, disgrace, anger, disquiet. Such dynamics summon my expertise. Mood disturbance, anxiety, panic, and maladjustment manifest as aversion to separation, school refusal, flawed coping mechanisms, pervasive woe. My approach allows vulnerability to speak. Individuals emerge from our process prepared to ably navigate their world by developing and honing effective strategies to ameliorate symptoms. More profoundly, they are empowered to not just push through travail, but to mindfully sit with it long enough to seed proper growth.

I specialize in trauma-informed care to support families with concerns such as grief, trauma, depression, abuse, anxiety, traumatic stress-related disorders, and relational/ parenting issues.
When one experiences trauma, it is possible that how they relate to others may change. I strongly believe that relationships; how we relate and interact with others, is the cornerstone of healthy living. What is left unresolved from one's history or childhood often finds its way into the relationships one has in the present. As a family therapist, I spend my time supporting individuals and families in exploring these past experiences that have made them into who they are now, allowing them to move forward and live a healthy lifestyle.

And everyone focuses on the baby but you feel like you don't have the space to complain? You need a place to vent, to game plan, and to learn the magic words to say that will calm everyones' nerves and get everyone back on the same team.

Reflecting back on 28 years of experience in practice as a licensed psychologist I am deeply appreciative of the trust placed in me by both current and former clients with whom I've worked, or who have referred their family or friends. I am told it is my easy-going, non-judgemental and comfortable style that helps my clients immediately sense my ability to connect with them and feel understood, supported and safe. While always professional, compassionate and sensitive, I believe my sense of humor also provides 'good medicine' and contributes to my ability to help others heal and grow.

Or it may be helpful for parents to see someone on our Parent Support Team.
I have been working with adolescents and young adults for over 16 years. I work with teens and college students who are dealing with anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, ODD, disordered eating, phobias, suicidal ideation, relationship issues, addition issues, or family conflict. This post pandemic and post virtual schooling world has created many challenges for kids these days especially having to come back into the world after being isolated. My therapeutic relationship with the kids I see is based on authenticity and genuineness and not a formal therapist in a suit taking notes.

My expertise includes treating individuals and families experiencing emotional and behavioral disorders, ADHD, medical illness and adjustment, change of life issues, and parenting .
Many people who seek mental health services struggle to find a clinician who is both personable and effective. The most important factor in therapeutic success is the therapeutic relationship. I am not the right fit for everyone, but finding the right professional is key. My work includes working with difficult to treat individuals as well as those who have experienced previous treatment failures. I am also a forensic psychologist and conduct evaluations of individuals involved with the legal system and often provide expert testimony. If you think I might be able to help you achieve your therapeutic goals, please contact me.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
