I chose to focus my training in marriage and family therapy because I truly believe that our problems stem from a breakdown in relationship.
Have you asked questions like this? “Why can’t my spouse understand me?” “Why don’t I love you the like in the beginning?” Then you have already started the work of building a better relationship. You are on the path to discovering how powerful healthy relationships are.

My work is targeted towards individuals who desire personal growth through the many hardships that life may bring. At times, therapy is beneficial during times of crisis when joy and anticipation for the future seem lost. For others, it can be helpful to explore life transitions and ones deeper purpose and meaning. The therapy experience is unique for each client. Some clients may desire brief treatment to get themselves back on track. Other clients, may utilize therapy as an ongoing adjunct to their journey of personal growth. I welcome clients to bring their spiritual values and beliefs into the counseling process, if desired.

I will help you identify what resources, strengths, and resiliency you already have - or can foster - to help you find the solutions you are looking for. I also value helping teenagers, and adults form a new relationship to their emotions in order to find ways to cope with extremes. When working with couples and families, I help individuals express themselves in a safe environment in order to find healing. If you are struggling with finding the light in the darkness, know that there is hope.

I see you, clutching your planner and to-do lists as you rush to do all the things. Everyone counts on you, but nobody seems to appreciate you. You are working so hard to try to live up to the expectations of your family , your boss, our culture. And yet you feel like you are letting everyone down. Why does it feel so hard to do what other women do? You wonder, “What is wrong with me?” What if I told you that you are not alone in this struggle? That feeling this way is optional? What if there was a way to be more of who you want to be, to be more of yourself. Don’t you miss her?

Kids and teenagers encounter new challenges every day. School, sports, activities, and family dynamics can lead to anxiety, stress, and even depression. They may feel overwhelmed and struggle to talk about what is going on. They may be scared, feel embarrassed, or feel unsure of who to talk about what they are feeling. You may have noticed changes in their behavior or mood as a result. I work with kids, teenagers, and families to identify and gain understanding of what has led to their struggles and collaboratively work on how to move forward. I bring a different energy to therapy.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
