My books include Stop Negotiating with Your Teen: Strategies for
Parenting
Your Angry, Manipulative, Moody or Depressed Adolescent, & Adolescent Therapy That Works.
Teenagers are my specialty, especially those wanting nothing to do with counseling! (Download my article "Why Teens Hate Therapy" on website.) I help teens (children, too) who are anxious, angry, defiant, withdrawn, moody, self-destructive, inattentive, depressed, doing poorly in school, or having trouble with peers. I work as effectively with boys as with girls, and can help you decide whether the problems you're noticing are a part of "typical" teen behavior or a sign of something more serious. I also offer one session consultations for parents who have questions about their kids or new
parenting
approaches.

The teenage years are the most vulnerable, exciting, and growing years of a young person’s life. Self discovery can often yield low self esteem, independence can easily shift to rebellion, and a slow maturation process often creates impulsive decision making. And when a
parent
’s warnings and worries don’t seem to have an impact on the teenager’s course, or when it feels too heavy to carry alone, it’s helpful to have another guiding force to help. Through counseling, an adolescent can feel understood, begin to understand themselves, and learn to understand and accept their role in the family and society.

Tired. Irritable. Unmotivated. Disconnected. Each can be a sign that stress is taking a toll on you. Life can feel out of our control and unpredictable— 2 main ingredients for anxiety. It gets overwhelming! You might feel like the issues in your life or relationship aren't "big enough" for counseling, but it's important to know that anything holding you back from having a full & satisfying life is worthy of your attention. We all need support.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."Lao-tzu You have just taken the first step of that journey. Life presents us with many challenges along the way. We may experience loss and significant changes in our lives. These challenges may present themselves in the many relationships we have with others, in our jobs, at school, and in our families. These challenges may affect our moods, cause us worry and despair, hamper our spirits, sadden us, confuse us and result in either our stumbling off course or losing a sense of direction. Therapy can be most helpful in getting you back on track and continuing your journey.

Sometimes it's difficult to talk about what hurts. Words to describe our feelings and experiences don't often come easily, or things can feel so big and complex that it's hard to share them with someone else. Maybe you've tried other forms of therapy and are still feeling confused or stuck.

Parenting Therapists
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.
When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.
How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
