I've helped families for 30 years, and raised three
children
of my own.
Teenagers are my specialty, especially those wanting nothing to do with counseling! (Download my article "Why Teens Hate Therapy" on website.) I help teens (
children
, too) who are anxious, angry, defiant, withdrawn, moody, self-destructive, inattentive, depressed, doing poorly in school, or having trouble with peers. I work as effectively with boys as with girls, and can help you decide whether the problems you're noticing are a part of "typical" teen behavior or a sign of something more serious. I also offer one session consultations for parents who have questions about their kids or new parenting approaches.

I also love working with small
children
.
The teenage years are the most vulnerable, exciting, and growing years of a young person’s life. Self discovery can often yield low self esteem, independence can easily shift to rebellion, and a slow maturation process often creates impulsive decision making. And when a parent’s warnings and worries don’t seem to have an impact on the teenager’s course, or when it feels too heavy to carry alone, it’s helpful to have another guiding force to help. Through counseling, an adolescent can feel understood, begin to understand themselves, and learn to understand and accept their role in the family and society.

Sometimes our
child
has needs that can effect the entire family system. I focus on providing the
child
direct care, and provide parents the support to keep going, to keep working toward the potential you know your
child
has. Specifically, if your
child
is having ongoing school problems, is showing oppositional behavior, or has difficulty maintaining friendships. Additionally, if your
child
has been diagnosed, or your questioning whether your
child
has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD, AD/HD) and needs "coaching" to cope with this problem, or he/she is showing signs of anxiety or depression, or abusing alcohol or drugs.

Sandplay Therapy is an effective tool for
children
and, too, it is an effective tool for adolescents and adults. Often, finding the words to express ones' feelings is a challenge. Together the client and the therapist review the creative process to help understand the feelings and experience. The picture created in the sand tray is a way for expressing ones’ internal feelings. Trauma whether it happens to a
child
, adolescent or an adult can contribute to feeling disorganized and insecure. For a
child
, adolescent or an adult feeling disorganized is scary. Sandplay Therapy will enhance self- regulation evident in one' behavior.

In working with
children
and adolescents (ages 5-18) you accept the responsibility of meeting with a population who may not have consented to therapy. Although guardians act within the
child
's best interest, the intervention may not be something the adolescent supports at the time. With this understanding, my primary goal is to simply connect regardless of who walks through that door. Progress cannot occur without a strong and trusting therapeutic relationship. To ensure this result, I rely on genuineness and transparency with the client. My extensive experience, both as a School Counselor and Therapist, lead my counseling direction

In my professional life, I have concentrated in a number of specialty areas- clients with combined medical and psychological difficulties, addictions,
child
and adolescent disorders, sexual disorders and sexual abuse, and adoption related issues.
I have been in practice thirty years. I see psychotherapy as a process of increasing self awareness, developing a more realistic and tolerant self esteem, and identifying and working through losses, disappointments and relational conflicts. This process enables reduction in pain, greater self acceptance, and comfort in relationships and family. This process occurs in a collaborative effort between you the client, and myself. The safe environment of the office allows for the full expression and understanding of what you experience, think, and feel. Our work together enables symptom relief, greater personal understanding, growth, responsibility and contentment.

I don't believe that adolescents/young adults are broken and need to be fixed, they need healed. I will create an emotionally safe environment, a place where you are accepted without judgement. This is the corner stone of developing trust. This process is a personal journey, one that I am honored to be a part of. I have specialized in working with adolescents and young adults for over 28 years. This is a unique population that requires an in-depth understanding of their worlds.

Sometimes life hands us more than we can deal with on our own; that’s why I became a therapist- to help people manage through difficult times so they can find a sense of safety & security to function at their best. Whether it's due to stress, anxiety, relationship/family challenges, or past emotional pain, we’ll work together to help you discover what you need to heal and grow. As a licensed therapist as well as a clinical supervisor of therapists, over the years, I’ve guided hundreds of individuals, couples, parents, and families in defining and connecting to the ideals, values, and relationships that made them feel whole again.

Sometimes it's difficult to talk about what hurts. Words to describe our feelings and experiences don't often come easily, or things can feel so big and complex that it's hard to share them with someone else. Maybe you've tried other forms of therapy and are still feeling confused or stuck.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."Lao-tzu You have just taken the first step of that journey. Life presents us with many challenges along the way. We may experience loss and significant changes in our lives. These challenges may present themselves in the many relationships we have with others, in our jobs, at school, and in our families. These challenges may affect our moods, cause us worry and despair, hamper our spirits, sadden us, confuse us and result in either our stumbling off course or losing a sense of direction. Therapy can be most helpful in getting you back on track and continuing your journey.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
