I have worked for years in the following fields as they relate to adolescents/teens: trauma/PTSD, behavioral concerns, school issues, self-harm and suicidal ideation, depression,
anxiety
, and family relations.
In working with children and adolescents (ages 5-18) you accept the responsibility of meeting with a population who may not have consented to therapy. Although guardians act within the child's best interest, the intervention may not be something the adolescent supports at the time. With this understanding, my primary goal is to simply connect regardless of who walks through that door. Progress cannot occur without a strong and trusting therapeutic relationship. To ensure this result, I rely on genuineness and transparency with the client. My extensive experience, both as a School Counselor and Therapist, lead my counseling direction

Sometimes our child has needs that can effect the entire family system. I focus on providing the child direct care, and provide parents the support to keep going, to keep working toward the potential you know your child has. Specifically, if your child is having ongoing school problems, is showing oppositional behavior, or has difficulty maintaining friendships. Additionally, if your child has been diagnosed, or your questioning whether your child has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD, AD/HD) and needs "coaching" to cope with this problem, or he/she is showing signs of
anxiety
or depression, or abusing alcohol or drugs.

I have worked with those managing
anxiety
, depression, and relationship challenges as well as those living with mood disorders and PTSD.
Sometimes the people in our lives just don’t get it. Our lives don't often offer the non-judgmental space to work through trauma, heartache, and overwhelming stress. Talking with a therapist is different from talking with a friend or family member because you are free of obligations and responsibility. It is all about you, and I will ask helpful questions, point out connections and patterns, and simply give you space to put yourself first and talk through your experiences.

One of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Part of our story is suffering. Emotional suffering may include
anxiety
, depression, grief, conflicts in relationships and trauma. For most of us, suffering is more than just one thing. As humans, we innately try to avoid suffering instead of confronting it. I want to guide you to understand, confront, and alleviate your suffering. The goal is to increase understanding of the self which leads to feelings of empowerment, courage, self-determination, hope, meaningfulness and freedom.

Do you struggle with feeling overwhelmed trying to keep up with a full schedule? Do you feel like the intensity of emotions can be a burden? Maybe it feels difficult to keep up with work, health, and relationships that are important to you. Do you struggle with feeling an abrupt surge of fear that seems hard to predict? Perhaps it is easy to predict and hard to control. Does the thought of what others might think or say prevent you from making connections with others? Experiencing doubt and uncertainty about the future can be difficult. Worrying about decisions that need to be made can leave you feeling stuck.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
