One of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Part of our story is suffering. Emotional suffering may include anxiety, depression, grief, conflicts in relationships and trauma. For most of us, suffering is more than just one thing. As humans, we innately try to avoid suffering instead of confronting it. I want to guide you to understand, confront, and alleviate your suffering. The goal is to increase understanding of the self which leads to feelings of empowerment, courage, self-determination, hope, meaningfulness and freedom.

I am passionate about helping those who suffer with mental health and dual disorders. My approach is empathetic and compassion first, with the goal of helping my clients overcome the obstacles in their lives that are inhibiting them from achieving fulfillment in life. No two clients are alike, therefore I treat each person's needs as I partner with them to heal the body, mind and spirit. My method is eclectic whether I am seeing you individually or in group , I believe everyone is capable of healing; as a therapist, it is my job to help guide each person on their own, personal journey toward healing and growth.

I believe the most important element of effective psychotherapy is the genuine connection between the patient and therapist. My approach to therapy is interactive, supportive, and empathetic. I see psychotherapy as a creative process and my patients as co-partners in this process of exploration and discovery. It is my goal to provide a safe and comfortable environment for you to present your challenges, needs, and goals, and for these topics to be met with empathy and without judgement. You have all the strength you need inside you; it is my goal to assist you in accessing that strength and utilizing it on your journey.

Our stories often include twists and turns that keeps us from moving forward. That might be due to turbulent relationships, use of substances or a loved one struggling with substance use, bouts of depression or anxiety that impacts quality of life, a loved one passing away or our own thinking patterns that influence our behaviors. My role in working with you is assisting you with moving forward, finding solutions or courses of action, and building your toolbox so that you can cope more productively.

People create knowledge in relationships. We NEED other minds to hone impressions into skills. We need explicit communication: this is HOW to create knowledge. The risks of self-disclosure are offset with great attendance, courage & proactive participation. It is HOW not WHAT problem is raised that yields solutions. Emotions are priceless data delivery systems; respected, examined & honored. Honest, caring connection buffer high-risk daring sharing. Problems are commonplace, unlike problem solving. Doing things differently creates different outcomes. At OATS YOU will build performance strength or you will be gone. It is up to you.

My therapeutic approach is informed by my background in meditation, Eastern contemplative philosophy, and evolutionary psychology. I work with clients to establish a treatment plan that is uniquely sensitive to their particular clinical needs and concerns. Some of the most common techniques I employ focus on the important relationship between body and mind; these experiential, somatic, and cognitive interventions allow for critical shifts in perspective that promote meaningful and enduring behavioral change.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
