I am a certified therapist and consultant in PE (Prolonged Exposure) Therapy, which is designed to help people address trauma -related memories, feelings, and situations.
As a therapist with two decades of experience in the field, I've encountered many questions about the role of a therapist. For many people we're the professional who will help them battle with their most pervasive problems, and who will be their anchor as well as a push in the right direction. For many others, we are the entrusted companion in their journey towards self-discovery and self-improvement.

My clinical experience as a psychologist includes addressing issues related to trauma , depression, anxiety and OCD, disordered eating, emotional difficulties, mood disorders, and personality disorders. I strongly believe that empowering my clients through learning skills to address these problems is the key to successful therapy. I also incorporate your personal values into skill building to emphasize the importance of living a value-driven life. Change is possible, suffering does not have to last forever, and it is possible to get fulfillment out of life, regardless of the circumstances.

Is your pre-teen or teen doubting themselves because the feel like they don’t fit the same mold as their peers? Have they expressed feeling alone, lonely or excluded? Have they experienced a loss or a trauma that is impacting their day to day life? The challenges children face today are many and the resulting feelings show up in the way they behave and feel. Possibly feeling sad or anxious, having frequent stomach and head aches, and/or behavioral and mood changes. Are you overwhelmed, feeling as though you can't make this better for your child? It only takes one family member's stress to throw the whole family off balance.

While I work with many types of problems, I specialize in the treatment of trauma (which includes PTSD from single traumatic experiences, as well as complex trauma from childhood experiences), anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive problems, suicidal tendencies, chronic pain/illness, and drug/alcohol problems.
Finding a caring, dedicated therapist to help you with your psychological or physical difficulties is important. One who is also experienced, skilled and knowledgeable is even more beneficial to your success. Your time and energy are valuable, and I avoid dwelling on directionless talk; focusing, instead, on developing effective actions and solutions. My sessions are two hours as I have found that to be more effective than a single hour. In helping you I draw on a wide range of rich, creative therapeutic approaches, including behavioral and cognitive therapies, hypnosis, EMDR, as well as methods derived from other healing practices.

I have worked in Philadelphia with families who are underserved and have experienced a great deal of trauma .
When one experiences trauma , it is possible that how they relate to others may change. I strongly believe that relationships; how we relate and interact with others, is the cornerstone of healthy living. What is left unresolved from one's history or childhood often finds its way into the relationships one has in the present. As a family therapist, I spend my time supporting individuals and families in exploring these past experiences that have made them into who they are now, allowing them to move forward and live a healthy lifestyle.

I have an investigative approach to seeking underlying issues related to the problems that bring people to seek therapy. My view on doing therapy involves a collaborative approach by matching the client’s personality and style and work at a pace comfortable for clients. I believe therapy can be informative, insightful and the awareness that clients obtain about themselves assists in the cathartic change they are seeking. I strive to assist people in obtaining relief from what it is that brought them into therapy in effort to bring about authentic contentment with themselves and their relationships.

My training, my experience, and my teaching and supervising have helped me to appreciate and apprehend the many and complex ways in which early experience becomes internalized and structured in one's internal world, and consequently becomes manifested and repeated in the external world of one's life and relationships. It is my goal to provide psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy of sufficient depth, duration and thoughtfulness to facilitate the mastery of emotional problems, the restoration and enhancement of self-esteem, and the fostering of emotional resilience, creativity and self-discovery.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
