When you look at your child , you see strength and potential within them; but big emotions and challenging behaviors can cause you to lose sight of those positives, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and lost. Children are complex, perceptive beings who know and understand more than we give them credit for, but they aren't always the best communicators, especially when it comes to their emotions. Thankfully, there is hope! Taking the time to understand your child 's perspective and experience will help you connect with them on a deeper level, setting the foundation for strong and secure relationships for life.

Parents are given the tools to understand what their children are communicating to them and we work as a team to strengthen the family system and decrease power struggles and stressors in the home. Main Line Play Therapy: Expressive Therapy Center now offers dance/movement, music, & play therapy,

Is it difficult to confront issues with your child , adolescent, college student or partner because anger and frustration end the interaction before anything is accomplished? Do you "walk on tiptoes" rather than start a fight? Are you worried about your teen's moodiness and 'addiction' to technology? I am a clinical psychologist with many years of experience as an individual (adult / child ) and family therapist. Communication and resolution of difficult issues is the focus of treatment. Therapy concentrates on solving problems and setting goals. I firmly believe that the emotional safety provided by the therapist sets the foundation for successful work.

My background is diverse as I also teach at the university level, and conduct evaluations for adults and for children with special needs.
Do you sometimes need someone to talk to to open up about your worries and sadness, and hopes and dreams? Maybe you don't want to keep asking your friends/family to listen or maybe there isn't anyone to open up to at all. Now you don't have to do it alone...

My mindfulness based, play therapy training has taught me how to help children that have gone through or may be going through a trauma. A child 's language is play. A play therapy room offers a variety of mediums that will help a child safely express what they need to in order to heal through their play. My sessions also will partially include the parents, where feelings and coping skills can be discussed before the play time begins.

My professional focus is on children ,adolescents and families. An additional focus is on the individuaI adult. Today, children and teens face adult issues at earlier ages. These challenges often affect the child 's educational, social and psychological well-being, which in turn impacts the family as a whole. One of my strengths is dispelling confusion, increasing self-awareness and self-esteem. This assists in facing everyday stresses and challenges, for the child as well as the parent or adult. My work promotes improved confidence, self-esteem and offers insight. These changes will improve mood, performance and relationships.

Many people face emotional challenges within and outside the family. I guide and support families, couples, individuals, and children in managing the obstacles that come their way. I believe the heart of the family is the wellbeing of its members. I provide treatment to those who experience distress in their daily functioning from a variety of sources, which often impacts loved ones. I treat relationship discord, depression, anxiety, child maladjustment and other stressors. I welcome those who, in the midst of their challenges, reasonably recognize that change must be pursued.

We are living in challenging times. Children and parents need support to get through issues such as divorce, loss of a loved one, illness of a family member, school pressures, adolescent conflict, adult children moving back into the home and bullying. Within the context of family therapy, I work with children ages three through the young adult years. I am a trained play therapist and able to help children and adolescents express their feelings and deep emotions. I am able to work, both individually with family members and in family therapy, to support change and growth for the entire family.

When our children hurt, we hurt. Teaching young children , adolescents and young adults coping skills that they will use for a lifetime is a wonderful gift for the entire family. Adult women experience a tremendous amount of stress. Habitual behaviors or ways of thinking that served us as children are often of no use and even harmful during adulthood. Feeling better requires challenging these old habits and creating new pathways to suit our current goals.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
