Life can be a complicated thing at all ages. There will be times when you feel like you have everything under control and other times when you cannot make sense of the feelings or events you’re going through. It is my responsibility to support and guide you through the hard times and help find ways to cope with these situations. Whether that is as simple as having someone to talk to or bringing awareness to behaviors and thoughts that are steering you the wrong way. Therapy starts with building a solid foundation based on trust and nonjudgment which creates a safe environment for you to be yourself.

Hi there, I'm Thomas! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who specializes in providing trauma-informed therapy to adults who reside in Pennsylvania. Most of my clients come to me because they're feeling stuck in the past or feel like they can't "get over" something terrible that happened to them. It seems like no matter what they do, they can't move on. They notice their trauma is affecting their mood, self-esteem, anxiety, and even their relationships, but feel stuck in trying to change it. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or weighed down by past experiences, I’m here to help you find relief and move forward.

We find a lot of times when people start searching for a therapist it's because they are in need of help. You've found yourself feeling overwhelmed, confused, stressed, the list goes on. You've gotten to a place where you no longer want to depend on those closest to you for support but rather than seek professional help. If this is you, The Empty Chair team is here to tell you that (first off you are not alone). Book your appointment and let's get started on your healing journey.

I have worked with a variety of patient populations, including families, adolescents, young adults, and mid-life/older adults, dealing with various mental health concerns, but largely specializing in anxiety and mood disorders. I have extensive experience treating young adults, especially, having done clinical work in four different colleges in the Philadelphia area. I have also facilitated many young adult therapy groups over the years. Fundamentally, I believe that if people are able to learn to accept and like themselves and be less self-critical, many of their struggles with anxiety and depression will diminish significantly.

You’re willing, capable, and want to SOLVE problems—but little seems to work when it comes to your relationship. The same arguments keep showing up, connection feels harder to find, and small things set off big reactions. You may be feeling distant, walking on eggshells, or wondering how it got this hard. These relationship issues are painful, but they can also be workable if you start addressing them today. In our sessions, we can clear through what’s stuck and acquire tools to communicate, reconnect, and feel like you’re on the same TEAM again, sparking passion. Things may be strained now, but this doesn’t have to be the end.

I'm a clinical psychologist with 30 years of experience working with all types of situations. Life is hard, and anxiety, depression, stress and trauma end up touching just about everybody at some point. My focus is on helping my clients maximize their ability to adapt to what life is throwing at them. Think of a surfer on the ocean. You have no control over the waves. But with balance and constant adaptation, you can ride those waves without getting hurt.

If you're feeling the weight of this life stage—career pressure, relationship challenges, or just a nagging sense that something's off—you're in the right place. Maybe it's constant overthinking, the pressure to have it all figured out, or just feeling stuck despite doing everything "right." I work with men and women in their 30s and 40s who are ready to make sense of what they're experiencing and move forward with more clarity and confidence.

As a therapist, I work with my clients to help them move toward a fulfilling, connected, and meaningful life. As human beings, we each have core yearnings to belong, to feel our experience is meaningful, and to know our lives matter. Unfortunately, because life sometimes involves emotional, psychological, social, and physical pain we can get stuck in patterns that don’t serve us. I help people develop insight into who they are and what they want, so they can make choices with greater clarity and confidence and live with greater balance and healing.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
