I utilize techniques from a myriad of therapeutic modalities, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person Centered Therapy,
Psychodynamic
techniques, and an emphasis on mindfulness techniques.
Seeking help when in emotional distress can be challenging and isolating, and I hope to bring comfort and relief to that process. It can feel like no one understands what you might be experiencing, or may even be difficult to understand your own emotions. In processing those emotions, thoughts, or experiences, you can work towards achieving clarity, insight, and move forward towards acceptance and change. My initial goal in therapy is to make you feel comfortable and to build a therapeutic and healing relationship.

As an eclectic practitioner that mainly uses CBT,
Psychodynamic
and Humanistic modalities, I work with a range of issues for individual therapy clients, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, gambling disorder, substance use/abuse, chronic illness, career issues, existential issues, relationship issues, etc.
I love being a therapist, and I have several beliefs about therapy that embody my therapeutic philosophy. First, I believe that the therapist-client relationship is sacred, and that only meaningful therapeutic work can occur through a strong alliance built on trust and free of shame and judgment. Secondly, I believe that therapy is a portal to healing wounds that loneliness and isolation worsen. Thirdly, I believe it is important to support and guide clients in living lives that are true to their own values and reflective of their authentic selves.

Life can be increasingly difficult to manage in our current social and economic environment. It can feel increasingly difficult to cope with life’s stressors as we struggle with our relationships as well as our own feelings of self-worth. Feelings of depression and anxiety can easily take hold of us, becoming increasingly dangerous to our wellbeing. There are times that it becomes increasingly important for us to have someone to turn to for support in times of despair. The way we feel about ourselves very often defines our relationships with others.

Highly sensitive old soul or empath, you and I will explore more deeply together than in traditional talk therapy. You've likely tried psychotherapy before but have noticed that the work has either gone nowhere or taken you only so far, or you felt misunderstood. With an uncanny and intuitive ability to "get" people from so many walks of life, I will invite you to go beneath your thoughts, connect with your body at a safe pace, and gently access the root of of your emotional discomfort and hurts to facilitate noticeable shifts with each session.

The primary focus of my practice for 40 years has been helping people achieve recovery from substance use disorders. I use a collaborative, motivational approach, rather than confrontation, and work with people on setting and achieving realistic and healthy goals for their problems. I believe, (as did Bill Wilson, the founder of AA) that there are many paths to recovery; each person must work on a program that reflects their unique needs and assets. I encourage people to explore their resources, their obstacles and their values in setting goals and in working a positive program. Secondarily, I am trained in couples/marital therapy.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
