The impacts of trauma, body image disturbance and chronic anxiety and depression can take a profound toll on our quality of life and the ways in which we show up for ourselves, our loved ones and our responsibilities. Over time, these experiences can lead to patterns of avoidance and isolation, fueling feelings of disconnection from others, our bodies and a sense of our true potential. Through a balance of psychoeducation, mindfulness and embodied practices, somatic therapy offers unique skills for healing that can help recover these lost connections, regain a felt sense of agency and return to a life that feels fulfilling.

A sense of wellbeing is the outcome of psychotherapy. This is a journey that we take together. There is no magic way to reach wellbeing. Your wellbeing will be reached through the act of self reflection , establishing appropriate interpersonal boundaries, exploring and resolving grief from loss, increasing effective communication skills, learning problem resolution tools, creating realistic expectations of one's self and others, creating self preservation activities and resolving prior hurts that negatively affect your present life. All of these therapeutic gains are within the reach of the client in my psychotherapy office.

Seeking therapy takes immense strength and courage. It can feel vulnerable to trust another human with your struggles, fear, and pain. From the beginning, I will do my best to listen deeply and carefully, respecting that you have been doing the best you can with what you’ve been handed in life. I believe that our symptoms often provide information about how we have had to adapt to our circumstances. I therefore strive to honor how you have had to cope while working towards alleviating your distress and deepening your connection with yourself and others.

You find yourself feeling overwhelmed by life and your emotions. Maybe you have turned to substances, food or relationships to ease the pain. You have lost trust in yourself and others. Do you struggle setting boundaries, people-pleasing or perfectionism? I help people find relief from the effects of trauma and growing up in a dysfunctional family system. Together we will identify and heal the parts of you blocking your authentic self. Sometimes talk therapy isn't enough. I have specialized training in body-based techniques to help you learn how to regulate your nervous system and feel more embodied.

You may look like you're holding it together on the outside—but inside, you're tired of the flashbacks, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm. I work with clients who feel stuck in patterns they can’t explain, often rooted in unresolved trauma or painful early life experiences. Many of my clients are high-functioning and insightful—but still feel hijacked by anger, perfectionism, or self-doubt. If your inner critic is loud, or you feel like you’re always bracing for something to go wrong, therapy can help quiet the noise.

Counseling can be daunting, especially when it comes to deciding whether to seek help. I understand that admitting our need for assistance can be challenging, which is why I prioritize creating a safe and comfortable space for individuals to explore their feelings and concerns.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
