I love helping people feel more in control of their lives and the direction they want to go. In our work together, we utilize simple and practical tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to identify unhelpful thought patterns, which we refer to as automatic negative thoughts (or ANTs). Once we recognize these patterns, we learn how to gently shift them into more balanced and positive ways of thinking. This can make a big difference in easing anxiety, lifting depression, and building self-confidence. I’m also trained in EMDR, which allows the brain to do the healing work it was meant to do.

You may be here because something in your life no longer works. Anxiety has taken over. A relationship is unraveling. Grief, trauma, illness or fear has narrowed your world. Or perhaps you are high-functioning on the outside , yet privately exhaused, stuck or quietly suffering. I want you to know something important: you are Not broken. And you do not have to live this way. For over 40 years, I have helped people who feel overwhemed by problems that seem endless. Many come to me after trying other therapies that didn't quite reach the heart of what was wrong. What they discover is-how to respond differently from the inside out.

I believe that we are all going through something in our lives and that from time to time we need the help of someone else to get through particularly rough patches. This is where a therapist can be very helpful. I am a compassionate, Board Certified, Licensed Clinical Social Worker who uses a variety of therapeutic approaches to help my clients heal and grow. I provide both individual and family therapy for persons ages 9 and up. I use many different therapeutic approaches because I tailor the therapy to each individual client, based on their specific needs.

I believe that all individuals are able to change but get stuck in patterns that do not serve them well due to daily stress. Changing these patterns is accomplished through interactive conversations and identifying why these patterns are not useful before creating new useful patterns. I work with couples on a variety of issues such as trust and betrayal, affairs, intimacy, grief, divorce, communication, addictions, and any of the myriad of relationship issues all couples experience. In addition, I work with children, youth and their families on a variety of relationship issues dealing with conflict, communication, parenting, defiance, adoption and respect.

I focus upon all things relational. We all occasionally find ourselves facing a transition/change, problem, concern, or conflict that we are unable to resolve; despite our determined attempts. I maintain that what we get "stuck-in" is living life and relational; no matter with whom or to what we are relating. If you desire, and are ready to learn how to get "un-stuck", I am prepared to help you create positive lasting changes in your life. I promise to provide you respectful, culturally sensitive, person centered, and solution focused counseling care. I look forward to hearing from you.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
