You’ve likely spent years trying to understand yourself. Staying up late analyzing your emotions, researching trauma, replaying conversations, and trying to figure out why you feel anxious, fearful, and overstimulated. Despite all of that awareness, something still feels unresolved. Perhaps you’ve been in therapy before and haven’t found the relief you were hoping for by talking about your problems. Insight alone isn’t enough to heal. What may help is a mind/body approach aimed at re-wiring your thoughts and beliefs. If you want to try processing in a different way that works directly with the subconcious mind and body, I can help.

I train and supervise therapists in relational psychodynamic psychotherapy and have co-authored peer-reviewed research on the importance of identity-affirming, neuroinclusive care.
You absolutely can heal, and finding the right therapist usually starts with a feeling: an intuitive sense that this person may be able to help. Competence in your specific areas of concern helps, too: people with anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, career stress, attachment difficulties, abandonment fears, and complex dissociative conditions, including DID, will find an experienced, compassionate witness. I enjoy working with older adults and young folks in equal measure. Opening a space where you can speak freely will help you heal, and your words won't meet cold silence or judgement.

Being human is hard - especially when old patterns keep surfacing in your relationships and inner world unresolved. Maybe you overthink conversations, struggle to set boundaries, find yourself people-pleasing, or feel emotionally exhausted by relationships. Maybe you're sensitive, and have a tendency to put everyone else before yourself. You know something needs to change, but it still feels out of reach. I work with people who long for something different but don't yet believe they can have it. I endeavor not to give answers - I help people reconnect with themselves experientially so that their own answers guide them.

I enjoy working with people of all kinds, but I work best with people that are ready to engage in therapy with active participation. I work best with people that are able to be vulnerable, trusting, and not necessarily looking for easy answers to complicated issues. I value mutual respect, openness, and a desire to be a positive part of our world.

I integrate EMDR, CBT, psychodynamic principles, and somatic experiences, and remain committed to ongoing education to provide ethical, and effective treatment.
My name is Elizabeth Cleary, LPC. I work with adults, often women, who appear capable and put-together on the outside but privately struggle with anxiety, trauma, self-doubt, and emotional exhaustion. You may feel stuck in constant overthinking, questioning yourself, or worrying about how you're coming across to others. Maybe you people-please, over-function, or hold everything in until it becomes too much. Even small interactions leave you emotionally drained. You understand your patterns, yet still feel stuck. Together, we'll work to heal the root causes, build self-trust, and create lasting change, not just temporary relief.

Fulfilling our potential is a lifelong journey of becoming more at peace with ourselves, deepening the intimacy in our relationships, being more authentically human, and feeling more alive each day. Along the way, certain challenges arise to cause us distress or confusion. Such moments can make us feel held back, afraid, or unsure of where to go from here. But these moments can also be the points of growth and healing from which we renew ourselves in ways we did not think possible.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
