In over 40 years of practicing individual and couple therapy, I've learned that over time the love and commitment inherent in a marriage can help undo a great deal of conflict .I prefer to build on strengths in the individual and couple. A troubled relationship can make it harder to see the underlying love and care which are there. Working with a therapist who is in tune with you, who is knowledgeable and compassionate, and who is direct enough to provide constructive feedback can help you both change for the better.

As a practicing, licensed therapist for the past 14 years, I have encouraged and supported many people to become their best selves. I have worked with people who were on very different journeys; with extensive experience with those who struggle with anxiety, depression, those who have experienced some kind of trauma in their life, who have self-esteem issues, grief and loss struggles, as well as substance abuse issues. My style of therapy draws from modalities such as cognitive- behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing, while I emphasize active listening and the implementation of a person centered, strengths- based approach.

Making the decision to begin or restart therapy is tough. We get messages from all around us that we should be independent or strong, so asking for support can feel like somehow, we've failed. Maybe it gives you anxiety just imagining how you would squeeze one more appointment into your already packed schedule. Less than optimal experiences in therapy might have you tired of searching and worried about who you'll be able to trust. Or maybe you're waiting for the 'right time' to begin. Whatever has brought you to this point right now though, has taken a lot of strength.

You have exhausted your resources trying to solve your current challenges and are seeking outside counsel, maybe for the first time. It feels daunting, seeking out a stranger to share what has been going on and wondering where to start. You come with strengths like perseverance - it has gotten you this far and you continue to seek answers. You are curious and willing to ask questions. You have courage, to share what is happening, to come as you are. You are someone who appreciates learning and is open to new perspectives because as Einstein said - “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it."

I have diverse experience across populations for the last 9 years. I then moved on to work as a mobile therapist and school based therapist for years before working in a private practice environment. The primary populations I work with include children, adolescents, as well as young adults.

Couples come to therapy often feeling frustrated, defensive, hurt and angry. Love, attraction and shared life goals may have brought them together, but along the way to deeper emotional intimacy couples meet roadblocks. Growing self-awareness and curiosity about their partner helps them appreciate their differences as enriching rather than threatening. Partners realize that each of them has a role in cultivating the quality of their relationship. Partners learn to support each other's growth and expand their horizons together. Their relationship feels more alive and hopeful. Therapy nurtures the art of relationships for all of us.

Women's Issues Therapists
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.
How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
