Choosing a therapist is a piece of cake. All you have to do is randomly pick someone out of this list and hope for the best, right? Just kidding. In all seriousness, finding a therapist can be a daunting task, and it sure isn’t ‘one size fits all’. My goal as a therapist is to help you reflect and create self-awareness and purpose, directed at overcoming mental or emotional roadblocks. “Empathy has no script. There is no right way or wrong way to do it. It’s simply listening, holding space, withholding judgment, emotionally connecting, and communicating that incredibly healing message of ‘You’re not alone.’”- Brené Brown.

Seeking help from a mental health or addiction counselor can be a daunting task. Often times, individuals find themselves working with therapists who only give advice, teach how to breath, promote coloring in workbooks, and/or give homework assignments as a means to work on your presenting symptoms. With me, you will experience treatment in a different way. My name is Ryan Bowers and I am a professional counselor who practices traditional psychotherapy. This means that we will work on identifying core issues that are causing issues in your daily life, while creating goals that will help you be the best version of yourself.

Therapy offers a unique relationship in which an individual or family is able to gain support and insight to create positive and healthy changes. I feel humbled by the privilege to work with those who are motivated to seek opportunities to heal and grow. While I have a specialization in the treatment of children/adolescents and families, I enjoy working with a diverse population of clients. My utilization of a person-centered approach allows for each therapeutic relationship to be tailored to an individual, addressing issues and stressors as defined while developing a trusting and empathic partnership.

I work well with a range of problems across the adult lifespan, with experience effectively treating depression, anxiety, trauma and problems with life transitions. I have a clinical interest in effective treatment of PTSD and serious mental illness. Since completing my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, I am currently working toward licensure as a psychologist under the supervision of Dr. Hoolahan and Dr. Sell. As a Marine Corps veteran, I have an appreciation for the obstacles that other veterans may face, both at coping with challenges resulting from their service or those that arise through transitioning back to a civilian life.

I have been a licensed professional counselor in the state of PA since 2005. I have over 20 years of direct experience as a counselor working in both mental health and substance use treatment. I meet my clients where they are at, based on their goals and values, not mine. I believe that everybody’s path to recovery looks a little different and I do my best to help guide my clients on their own unique journeys. I strongly believe in a holistic approach to healing as our minds, bodies, and spirits are all interconnected. I am down to earth and have a non-judgemental client- centered approach.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
