While I have experience using most traditional interventions (CBT, DBT, etc), experiential therapy is a unique part of my work.
You want the best for yourself (or your child). The story you tell of your experiences deserves to be heard. We all deserve to have space to be deeply understood at any age. It's my desire to provide understanding; listening that is so healing. I work with children, teens, adults to build lasting skills and resources for them. I value working with individuals that are learning to navigate their identities in an overstimulating world. Clients and I work together to process, and build skills in order to meet their treatment goals and create enduring healing. I have a deep love for Vermont and my aim is to support our community.

Life can present many unexpected challenges, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. These challenges impact our emotional wellbeing and our relationships. As your therapist, I will offer you the opportunity to reflect upon your life in a safe, respectful, and confidential environment. My area of expertise is Whole Mind-Body Psychotherapy which focuses on the interplay between physical health (body) and mental health (mind). We will identify how your life experiences are stored in your brain-body and influence your emotions, thinking, and behaviors. You will develop new pathways to promote a sense of well-being and inner strength.

I believe that whatever we are struggling with - anxiety, depression, life transitions, feeling aimless, difficult memories, anger, loneliness - we have within us everything that is needed to live the life we desire. Our core self is whole and wise. I work collaboratively with clients to reconnect with this wisdom and innate healing potential. By allowing space for your inner experience, we can work together to shift underlying patterns causing distress, heal past wounds, and mobilize inner resources in order to allow for an experience of greater freedom, joy and peace, and a deeper connection with self and others.

Therapy is still somewhat stigmatized in our society. I believe a connection & relationship of trust is at the heart of therapy. This relationship is important because the therapist and client need to work as a team. The therapist doesn't dispense advice. Instead, a good therapist listens attentively. Then together they can discover what is leaving the client feeling stuck and help the client move forward and find happiness.

There are times in our lives when everything seems to be humming right along, and there are times when it's just not. It could be that you're worried about your child who's struggling, maybe you don't know what you want in life, your relationships aren't fulfilling, or you're feeling lost and unsatisfied in life despite having done what you thought would make you happy. Regardless of the reason, if these kinds of challenges are keeping you up at night, or distracted during the day, you're not alone. You're at a crossroads.

Taking the first step can always be the scariest. Challenging yourself outside your comfort zone, thinking about yourself from within, while utilizing nature's abilities to help steer you in the right direction and create healthy strategies on decreasing the anxiety, depression, and/or other concerns that you may be experiencing. We will disconnect from technology and immerse ourselves into the trees, in order to rejuvenate our inner self.

Even in the best of times, life transitions can feel overwhelming. Anxiety may feel unmanageable, or depressive symptoms may have you feeling "stuck." Our past experiences shape who we are and how we interact with the world, and those patterns may not serve us anymore. All parents struggle from time to time, and teens are under more pressure than ever these days, making coping as a teen or a parent of a teen difficult at times. The past years with COVID may have changed your perspective on life, or altered your priorities.

Are you someone who has done talk therapy in the past and thinks of yourself as self-aware, but wants an approach that is designed to help you make positive and lasting change from the inside out? You’re feeling stuck and maybe a little burned out in your looks-so-awesome career? Or maybe you’re facing a potential or imminent life or relationship change, wondering about your next steps and not sure how to move forward? Or maybe you are looking for a therapist who "gets it" about climate distress, threats to democracy, and the social justice concerns that keep you up at night.

I think the connection between a therapist and client is the most important aspect of the counseling work. When a good relationship is established you can reach your goals and challenge yourself in an environment that feels safe. I enjoy working with children, teens, and families in a variety of ways. I also enjoy supporting parents with the many challenges of raising children in todays society. My theoretical approach is supported by Internal Family Systems theory where we will work with parts of self to help understand, and support a healthier version of ourselves.

Different problems force us to take stock in who we are and how we are living. We struggle through anxiety, sadness, trauma, loneliness; some of us have used unhealthy coping mechanisms to get by. Eventually, we come to learn that asking for help is one of the most powerful actions we can take.

I use somatic and brain based experiential methods, such as AEDP, brainspotting, and the therapeutic reconsolidation process to help you finally let go of feelings, behaviors, and limiting beliefs that were developed from past experiences, so you can finally feel better and enjoy the life you want to live. I'll also teach you CBT and DBT skills to cope with the things in your life that you can't change so you can stop suffering over them.

I work with adolescents and young adults to strengthen awareness, joy, and sense of power in relationship to self, others, and systems you interact with. We are living in a tumultuous time in which many systems and institutions are actively constricting aliveness in our natural world and within us as individuals. This can manifest in feeling angry, apathetic, or powerless, or leave you searching for meaning and how to move forward. I work with individuals to cultivate your wild and authentic self as a beautiful form of vulnerability, resistance, and living wholeheartedly.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
