I have found that the most significant aspect of success in any therapeutic experience is the client-therapist relationship. It is very important to me that I create a safe, non-judgmental environment for my clients. I tend to have a more casual and client-centered style and strive to provide a warm and empathetic environment, while also bringing humor and playfulness in my relationship with clients. Each of us has different experiences, which is why I tailor treatment styles to meet each client's individual needs. I believe in providing a safe space, in which clients can grow and always feel comfortable being their authentic selves

I am passionate about working with clients who have the desire to change but find themselves stuck in their "symptoms." Many of my clients get stuck in their head, and can't find the pathway to their heart/feelings. Others are so overwhelmed by their feelings that they can't experience peace. I find that using coping tools can help, but that Healing can take a different road than symptom management. If you want to find answers and experience healing, while also using the tools you've picked up along the way, then I would love to hear from you and see if we might be a good fit for this part of your journey.

Yes!..I can help: Be like the teens, who finally feel fully understood. Or the adults, who really need an attentive guide during a mid-life crisis. Or be like the ones who just got off-track in life, but were able to get refocused toward a better path. Or the folks with personal trauma who dive deeper with Brainspotting. Or be like those who use Art Therapy or SandTray Therapy to express themselves and thus, grow a level of self-respect that everyone can see, and appreciate. LET’S CREATE A THERAPEUTIC SPACE FULL OF TRUST SO THAT YOU CAN SAFELY HEAL. My work begins with some assessment and some emotional first aide, and then...

Hi, I am Karen and I enjoy therapeutic work with individuals and couples. Although I work with a number of mental health issues I especially enjoy working with depression, anxiety, grief, emotional trauma, self-loathing, self-esteem, shame and spirituality. As a therapist my goal is to help clients live to their true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While together we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to help you better understand and resolve the problems you currently face.

You don’t want to feel controlled by this anymore. Maybe it’s a painful past experience—despite your best efforts to move forward, it continues to weigh on you. Perhaps a chapter of life has ended and another started—a breakup, job change, loss, or new child—and you feel like your old ways of doing things aren’t working anymore. And while things might look “okay” from the outside, you don’t feel that way. Your relationships feel disconnected and even managing your day-to-day responsibilities is overwhelming some days. You know something needs to change—and you believe it’s possible—but you need some support to make that happen.

Dr. Giffin specializes in supporting adults, and couples who are struggling in relationships with life partners, peers and/or superiors that create issues at home, school and/or at work. The individual may be wondering what part of the problem lies with other people, and what parts may be personal challenges of their own, e.g., low self-esteem, anger, anxiety, or depression. The desired goal is to establish a more positive sense of self-worth and become empowered to utilize more productive lines of communication reducing or eliminating the discomfort that is being experienced.

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I enjoy helping people to improve their overall quality of life, not only through symptom reduction, but also through functional restoration. Given my experience working with chronic pain, trauma, depression, anxiety, and stress, I understand that when we are impacted by these challenges, we often feel unable to participate in the life roles that contribute to defining who we are and what we want to experience in life. Psychotherapy offers an opportunity to build and regain confidence, improve relationships, increase productivity, overcome difficulties, and more effectively manage daily life.

Events in our life and our relationships can leave us feeling sad, depressed, angry, hopeless, overwhelmed, anxious, or lonely. When we finally realize enough is enough, it’s time to make a change. But how do we do that? It’s easy to feel lost and stuck on how to bring about change. I help adults, children, teens, couples, and families get unstuck and find a way forward in their life and relationships. If you’re ready to make a change, let’s talk.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Roseville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
