Life can bring pain and frustration into one's heart and mind. It creates sadness, anxiety, and a feeling of being stuck. It may feel hard to imagine that it is possible to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You may feel stuck personally or within your relationships. Therapy can offer clarity and strength as you work through, rather than avoid, that which causes you pain. Providing a safe space for someone to process is essential, and together we can traverse the inner journey of self-discovery. Exploring one's thoughts, feelings, and the unconscious can help illuminate what keeps one stuck in unhealthy patterns.

I would like to start by saying the act of asking for help is often a frightful one especially in a society that can often demonize needing help. I respect the bravery necessary to be willing to open up and be vulnerable about difficult parts of your life and to embrace the desire to grow and heal. Depression, grief, anxiety, and more are all powerful forces and seeking help for those is an admirable act. By sharing a bit about my frame of practice and what my approach to care is; I hope I can help to alleviate some of the anxiety associated with starting your therapy journey.

I believe that when someone feels safe, growth can occur, and my goal in our sessions is to meet you where you’re at and help you achieve your goals. Although we may already have the skills to create change in our lives, we often need help identifying and developing those skills, and I would love to help you develop the tools necessary to build the life you want to live and overcome challenges that might make you feel stuck. I view the counseling process as an alliance and the clients as the experts of their lives. Within the structure of the therapeutic relationship I will help you access your inner strengths and promote change.

Sometimes people show up for therapy with a defined idea of how they want their lives to be different and what goals need nourishment. Others simply know they are yearning for something 'more'...usually something that resembles peace and relief. No matter who you are, and what peace looks like to you, I'd love the honor of walking beside you on your path. My hope is that our time together will offer you new perspectives, renewed hope, healed wounds and invigorated joy. Whether you feel burdened by loss, change or the heaviness of this chapter of life, or are simply wanting connection, I'm here and thrilled to connect.

Have you experienced being in a space where there isn’t anyone who looks or feels like you? You felt different and unwelcomed somehow... Did you experience difference in a way that made small paper cuts in your heart? Using a trauma-informed integrative approach to self-discovery and healing, I invite you on a journey to explore how your lived experiences shaped your perception of yourself and the world around you, your pattern of communication, and the relationship that you have with yourself and others. Key questions driving our work together: (1) Who are you? (2) How did you get here? (3) Where would you like to go from here?

Asking for help is difficult; this may be why it feels safer to tuck back into ourselves and endure struggle internally. We judge ourselves for not having the strength to overcome pain and do additional damage in the process. Are you someone who deals with inner turmoil? Do these struggles lead to excessive worry, mood swings, impulsive, or destructive behaviors? I use compassion, connection, and therapeutic skills to help folks learn positive behavior changes, and process difficult emotions. A collaborative therapeutic relationship can help you to recognize your own strengths, so you can handle life's challenges effectively.

Life is meant to be lived fully, but often there are circumstances that get in the way of our ability to engage at the level that we want to. Whether that is a trauma or loss or a major life stressor that has made life seem unbearable, you can receive help and there is hope of moving forward and living life to the fullness of your potential. My counseling practice stems from the belief that each and every human has value and deserves to be seen and heard, regardless of age, background, or status. I work with individual adults and adolescents employing trauma-informed care on your path to recovery from life’s difficulties.

Some seasons (or years) of life can leave us feeling stuck, disconnected, and fearful. Life can be devastatingly full of loss with little hope of recovery. I believe the best way to experience change and move towards recovery starts with acknowledging our unique strengths and resources - what are those things that keep us going? It also requires confronting the darker parts of life with a few trusted people. We are meant for connection. I would be honored to be a trusted person who walks towards healing with you. Are you open to exploring your own road of recovery with me?

Listening, acknowledgement, & building trust are key ingredients to her approach. Amy tunes into the client in each moment of every session to understand what they are experiencing to help them get their needs met. I work best with people who are looking for help with their issues and are willing to try new approaches to the way they go through life. People who realize that most of the work in psychotherapy is done outside of the office do well with me. I personalize treatment to the individual, and use proven techniques along with "homework assignments" where appropriate, to facilitate long lasting change and improvement in quality of life.

Accepting New Clients! - I work with individuals who struggle with relationships. This includes intimacy issues, problems with addiction, and unhealthy attachments. These issues can present themselves in romantic partnership but also peer, friend, and family relationships. Whether you struggle to maintain relationships, consistently find yourself in "toxic" or dysfunctional relationships, avoid closeness with avoidance behaviors/addictions, have patterns of self-abandonment, and/or feeling out of control, I might be able to help. Relationships are the most important thing in our lives as humans, it's difficult when we struggle.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Kirkland?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
