Healing is a journey. For some, "healing" means reversing years of trauma , and for others it means 'getting out of my own head' or 'getting un-stuck.' For everyone, the path to healing is a difficult one, and it is lighter, easier, more meaningful when others join in with you. To you who have tried to go it alone, I invite you to reach out. Connecting with a counselor is a way to get un-stuck in your journey towards health, to bring healing to those deeper places of hurt.

What could your life look like if you are able to be your best self? What do you need to feel content and at peace? Together, we can work together to discover who you want to grow into. In therapy, we explore the root causes of unhelpful feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Then, we will work towards bringing healing and peace back into your life while being sensitive to people's life experiences, including their culture, trauma and values. Our sessions will be a safe space that allow you to focus on your goals and dreams where I act as a guide and support to you.

As a trauma -informed therapist, I view anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and other areas of therapeutic work with attention to past experience.
People often begin counseling when it's too hard to stay the same. Even though seeking help can seem like a sign of weakness, it’s not an indicator of failure. Whatever the reason you’re searching for a therapist today, it takes courage to notice that reason within yourself and reach out for support. Maybe you’re ready to shift patterns in close relationships, or you’re ready to build a better relationship with yourself. Acknowledging distress is a chance to create meaningful change in your life.

I frequently work with clients who are struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma .
We all have sense for when we can benefit from more support in life. I offer compassionate and evidence-based therapy, collaborating with clients toward their goals. First, let's identify the values that guide you in life. Next, we will identify the goals you are working toward whether that is making transitions in life or cultivating more peace of mind.

I utilize evidenced based and trauma -informed care practices, including EMDR, DBT, ACT, and attachment-based theory.
I want you to leave each therapy session feeling more hopeful than when you started. I love working with clients motivated to make changes, and also clients who feel uncertain about their ability to feel better—it’s a big step to start therapy! As a therapist with extensive experience working with clients coping with anxiety, trauma , OCD and dissociation, I consistently see how traumatic events unconsciously block and inhibit an individual from feeling hopeful and making change in their lives. My goal is to provide a safe, trusting space to address what's burdening you and empower your sense of agency.

I am a strengths-based, trauma informed therapist who enjoys helping people work through life challenges and achieve their goals. Responding mindfully to life is crucial for healing, growth, and happiness. We are all interconnected through our relationships. Trauma happens in relation to others, and so does healing. We can choose to change, or we can pass on our trauma to those around us. When we heal ourselves and our communities we make the world a better place.

Sorry, not accepting new clients. If you are reading this you have found the courage to consider trusting someone you have never met with your fears, frustrations and hopes. I honor this trust and the individual needs that each person brings to counseling. My practice is focused on assisting those who have met a challenge in life such as the loss of a loved one, chronic or acute illness, relationship conflict, job stress or traumatic events. Although these may be common experiences that many of us share they can also cause symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger or PTSD if lived in isolation.

Creating safe conversations with people who have been exposed to trauma that struggle with feelings of worthlessness, face relationship challenges, and find it difficult to stay. Conditions of trauma experiences vary due to proximity, intensity, and frequency. Critical incident exposure is when natural coping mechanisms of the brain and body become overwhelmed and therefore revert to a potentially damaging stress state required for survival. Options under such duress become limited to fight, flee, or freeze responses. Melissa Shockman, MA has a master’s level degree from George Fox University in Marriage, Couples and Family Therapy

Trauma comes in many forms. It can be from childhood abuse, car accidents, toxic work environment, toxic relationship, racial injustice, war, rape, bullying, natural and manmade disasters like wildfires and earthquakes. You may have the symptoms of PTSD but not have explicit memories of the traumatizing experience. EMDR walks you through a series of steps to help decrease the symptoms of PTSD (nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety, insomnia, avoidance and hopelessness about the future). It also helps to map out a plan to deal with future triggers and gives a renewed and positive belief system about the self. I offer a free consultation.

These include life transitions (grief, life-threatening health diagnoses, career, retirement), identity (gender, sexuality), relationship discord (family, intimate partners), and trauma (complex and chronic).
Do want to want to live authentically with yourself and others? Has something happened that makes you question your core beliefs and values? My primary goal is to understand you as to want to be understood - without rigid diagnoses or other labels. We will work together to fully understand who you have been, who you are in the present, and who you aspire to be. We will also consider how your current beliefs may be based on long-held assumptions and are no longer your own. Ultimately, good therapy will free up your capacity to consider new choices that are more closely aligned with your own values and goals.

It feels like no matter how hard you try, that somehow you always end up right back where you started. Whether it is trauma , anxiety, depression, being plagued by nagging self-doubts, or life just feeling hard, it is taking a toll. The bending and contorting yourself to be what others think you should be leaves you feeling anxious or depressed and disconnected from yourself. And then there are those experiences that you just don’t talk about. The shame and guilt feel like too much. Every day feels harder than the last and you are so ready for that to change. Ready for healing and reclaiming yourself.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
