You care about your growth and healing journey; you’re invested in helping yourself uncover and sort through your "issues." You’ve tried to figure it out, tried to find the right path, yet you continue to feel stuck, frustrated and/or overwhelmed. Perhaps you've even resorted to blaming yourself. Nothing is wrong with you, you simply have not yet found your way through. I offer therapy for motivated individuals seeking to be free from unintegrated pain impacting daily life. I help individuals find their way. I believe the answers are within you, but we all need help to find them, along with effective guidance to support our process.

Do you daydream of being able to press pause on life to rest, catch up on sleep, not think? These days, almost every day feels next-level hard. You know your job or chronic health conditions are affecting your mental health and let’s face it, a lot of other parts of your life (your relationships, hobbies, sleep). You have been in cycles of hoping things will change, but after finding yourself stuck in the same cycles of overdoing and trying to figure things out on your own, you’re realizing you’re done and over it (cue rage quitting fantasy).

Do you feel disconnected & detached? Are you struggling to find peace & security with yourself or in your relationships? Our minds & bodies are interdependent- so reliant on one another that they often try to protect themselves by splitting apart or shutting down. It can be so tempting to numb ourselves to pain, loss, or stress to try to minimize their impact. Inevitably, we numb the good along with the bad. This mind-body disconnection tends to reveal itself most during major life transitions & often coincides with trauma, eating disorders, anxiety or depression. You may be in the midst of one (or several) of the above.

Are you feeling "stuck" or "shut down"? Perhaps you're feeling like you are on a never-ending "hamster wheel" and are having trouble making sense or finding purpose in your life. Maybe anxiety or depression are preventing you from engaging with yourself and the world in the way that you would like - more connected, more open and less "closed off." I can offer a safe space for you to process these and more life issues you are facing, freeing you from the burden of bearing them alone and perhaps learning new strategies to cope with life's stresses. Normally you're pretty good at overcoming obstacles but are finding it challenging.

I frequently work with women, LGBTQIA+ folks and anyone who is seeking additional support while navigating this challenging political climate. I enjoy working with those who seek to strengthen their relationships and self-esteem, to improve mental health symptoms, and to support people who are moving through a difficult chapter. I am a former first responder as well, and I am happy to offer support to those in high-stress work environments. I appreciate the bravery and effort it takes to seek counseling. As such, I seek to create an environment that is warm and affirming, where you can be your authentic self.

Why might an individual want to see a therapist specializing in open relationships and consensual non-monogamy?

A client seeking help with an open or consensually non-monogamous relationship will prefer to talk with a professional whom they can count on to be nonjudgmental. Talking with a supportive therapist may on its own help relieve some of the stigma and challenges partners face. That said, the most important factor in the success of any type of therapy is the ability of the client and practitioner to form a strong, trusting bond. For this reason, an individual or couple could find success with a therapist who does not specialize in non-monogamous relationships but with whom they can build trust.

When should open or consensually non-monogamous partners seek counseling?

Like other couples, polyamorous partners typically seek counseling when they face relationship challenges they can’t solve themselves. In non-monogamous relationships, this could include breaches of trust, including infidelity; unclear rules or violations of boundaries; jealousy of outside partners; the stress of juggling the needs of multiple partners; or the effect of high partner turnover on children. Like those of other couples, polyamorous bonds can be threatened by increasingly frequent arguments, poor or dysfunctional communication, diminished emotional or physical intimacy, or the feeling that something is wrong, even if they don’t know what it is.

Do therapists have special training to gain expertise in open relationships and consensual non-monogamy?

No, but individuals seeking help with non-monogamous relationships would most likely consult a licensed professional with specific training in couples counseling or couples therapy. Couples counseling and couples therapy both involve teaching concrete strategies to navigate conflict in relationships. A good therapist can engage both partners as they explain these approaches but can also work with a single partner.

How long does therapy for consensually non-monogamous couples typically last?

Couples therapy for any type of couple, tends to be relatively time-limited, lasting around 12 weeks on average. A good therapist will tailor sessions to the individual partners’ emotions and sometimes their past, along with patterns found to be repeating in the relationship. In many cases, clients should expect their therapist to assign “homework” between weekly sessions.
