Human Nature has adapted, grown and embraced change throughout our history. As an adult, or couple in a relationship, you can explore tools to meet your specific needs. By identifying old triggers and tapes, you can let go of what you have outgrown. Your previous strengths can carry you from who you have been, to who you choose to be. With this old resilience, you can allow change and expand your experiences. You can step forward toward a new vision of you. Choose a "do-over". Learn to accept your changes with self-compassion and a renewed curiosity for self expression. Move from resistance to acceptance to simple joys.

Lasting healing is a subtle & gradual process, & thankfully we don't have to do it alone. In supporting your healing journey, my desire is to see you move from constriction (pain/trauma/symptoms) into expansion (pleasure/liberation/alignment with self). I believe we do this by: recognizing the barriers in our lives, finding the ways in which trauma has been stuck & stored within the body, & gently moving through stagnant pain/symptoms by establishing safety & recalibrating the nervous system together. Therapy is a beautiful co-creative process where we get to support the life you envision; one that honors your most sacred self!

Is your middle or high school student struggling with learning? Are you becoming increasingly concerned as your teen-aged or young adult student approaches independence, and can't seem to earn the grades that will ensure college success? Or are you yourself a student having difficulty with classroom learning, studying, paper preparation, problem solving, or passing examinations? Or perhaps you are an adult considering a return to college or graduate work, but are hesitating, due to a history of learning difficulties as a child? A strong, thorough assessment is the first step!

I view counseling as an opportunity for growth in personal health and self-discovery during times of transition, change, and unknown certainties. The counseling room is a place of openness with no judgement. I come from a Person Centered Theoretical background, meaning there is unconditional care for every aspect of your experience. I support clients in evaluating their thought processes, the actions that follow, and if that is meeting their needs or not. I also provide Clinical Supervision for associates, and Supervision of Supervision.

Have you and your partner been sweeping things under the rug? Increased stress, broken trust, and life transitions tend to shine a spotlight on the elements of our relationships we've hoped would go away or tried our best to ignore. It can cause us to act in ways we never thought possible. When our relationship has become the source of distress we often create a negative story of our partner that is difficult to re-write. Once our mind views our partner as a source of hurt and pain, it's hard to see them as anything but potential danger.

So, your relationship with food has brought you here, but maybe you’re unsure if what you consider some form of overeating warrants seeking professional help. You don't have to suffer from anorexia and/or bulimia to "deserve" treatment and support. People who are enduring binge and emotional eating are often blamed (by themselves and others) for their use of food. If this is you, you may believe you have no "will power" and your relationship with food/body is your "fault". You aren't yet aware there are reasons (always other than will power) that explain your experience with food/body. You are not to blame.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
