The damn is ready to break - the tears are right behind your eyes! What happens if it breaks? You don’t know that you can put it back together let alone rebuild it completely. Nobody understands how hard it is to keep going. Life has just been so hard since it happened. The bad dreams only make it worse, you can’t remember the last time you got a good night's
sleep
. The constant anxiety and feeling on edge is just a cruel bonus. You’re afraid, embarrassed and stressed. Somehow, you pull yourself together...again. But every time you do you feel even more crushed and drained. As if you, the real you, is eroding.

I specialize in work with individuals who experience Anxiety Disorders (OCD, General Anxiety, Phobias), Depression,
Insomnia
, Autism Spectrum Disorders as well as those with medical or complex presentations (e.g. depression and diabetes). I believe therapy must involve a human connection and have come to find a good sense of humor is critical to the work done in therapy. Without a strong therapeutic relationship, it is nearly impossible to make progress. However, within the context of a collaborative, supportive environment, CBT tools can be very useful. When CBT tools are not helpful, eccentric evidence-based practices may be.

Seeking a therapist can feel like an overwhelming process as a Veteran, Police or Corrections Officer. By offering a free 15 minute phone consult, I hope to ease that search and make it a little more comfortable by answering concerns you may have. Because of years of involvement in Military and Law Enforcement culture as a family member, spouse, Blue Star Mom and Police Officer Reservist, I understand our culture and provide a unique ability to connect when it comes to counseling one of our own as it relates to critical incidents, PTSD, crisis, suicide and trauma by offering hope alongside those who serve.

Supporting all new mothers and mothers-to-be as they navigate the journey of motherhood. While there's a wealth of information on pregnancy and prenatal care, there's very little out there to support mothers, babies, and families during the postpartum phase.

Working in education for over 12 years has given me a great gift. I have been able to access diverse populations, ages and needs. Working with children and adolescence is absolutely life-giving. I believe behavior is a form of communication, that ultimately children want to do well, but sometimes they lack the self-awareness and skill necessary to thrive. I am honored to get to be the one to support them in their journey and equip them with the tools needed for growth and success socially, emotionally, spiritually and educationally. I am also working with men, women and families. Everyone deserves to feel seen, valued and heard.

When working with clients, I see people as unique individuals who are trying to find their own meaning for their lives and a purpose in life. Through therapy we can learn so much about ourselves and our goals which we might not even be aware of up to this point. Part of my belief in therapy is centered in the idea that each person is capable of reaching their desired self or achieving self actualization. I believe individuals and relationships are trying to find their best possible versions of self. In my practice I emphasize promoting communication and emotional awareness.

“Healing takes courage, and we all have courage, even if we have to dig a little to find it.” I see my life as a mission to help others see themselves in their original beauty, to learn the truth about who they are so they can be set free, to assist them in opening to their own unique destiny, and to work through beliefs and behaviors that keep them trapped in old ways of being. This is work I have had to do on myself, and still continue to do. I believe in using a holistic approach, which addresses every level of our being - the body, emotions, mind, and spirit.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
