Make today the day you take your life back from chronic physical and emotional pain .
If you've ever watched a good movie or seen a compelling drama on the stage, you know the story doesn't resolve itself until the second act. Just as "life imitates art," you may experience situations, thoughts, and emotions road blocking your "second act." I’m honored to help you navigate life choices amidst these roadblocks through my combined approach using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness-based exposure therapy. ACT is an evidenced-based therapy consistent with the sentiment of the "Serenity Prayer" in focusing on change we can control; letting go of things we cannot.

Trauma is a highly complex and personal experience. Everyone's experience and definition of trauma is different. Among both professionals and clients, it is often incredibly misunderstood. It affects us across physical, social, emotional, and spiritual bounds. It compromises our ability to process sensory input and renders us incapable of communicating at times. Traumatic experiences can make us feel "small" and incompetent, incapable of managing basic tasks at times, or we may even develop intermittent or chronic pain .

My psychotherapy approach values you as a whole person, in depth. I relate to each individual as a person rather than a label, and so each person's therapy experience is unique. Those who come to me for therapy bring a wide range of concerns, aims and hopes. I work with people struggling, for example, with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma, grief, life transitions, spiritual concerns, work concerns, physical illness / pain , search for meaning and purpose, and creativity concerns. I see the difficulties and suffering an individual brings to therapy as an entry point toward healing and growth.

As a women's mental health therapist, I specialize in obesity/binge eating/emotional eating, anxiety, depression, chronic illness , mindfulness, and self-love/self-compassion.
You should be so proud of yourself. You finally did it! You overcame your fear and are thinking about reaching out to a therapist. You have made the first step and should give yourself some love for that. Wait...self-love is hard for you? The bully in your head tells you that you will be laughed at, judged, maybe even told you are utterly hopeless. Do you also struggle with self-worth, anxiety or depression? What about your relationship with your body? Are you obese, an emotional eater, or binge eater? Do you always put others before yourself? Now this is sounding familiar, I think we should chat!

What has brought you here to this moment? Does something keep showing up in your life that is causing you distress, affecting your well being, relationships, and or future outlook? Do you need to add to your toolbox to address challenges such as substance use, problem gambling, chronic pain , trauma, and or mental health issues?.
When I was in the 9th grade, I was one of two students from every class that were selected by their classmates to become Natural Helpers. We received training in the skills of active listening, mediation and problem-solving. Little did I know that this experience would lead me to where I am today, as a counselor and therapist for the last twenty-one years. In my work in residential treatment, outpatient clinics and pain management practice, I have thoroughly loved getting to watch people of the ages 13 to 82 have epiphanies, adopt new perspectives, change unhelpful thought patterns, and begin to love and know themselves again.

I invite you to a safe and held space where transmuting pain and suffering into embodied medicine is the natural human experience. As a relational and earth-conscious therapist, I believe alchemy is human nature. I specialize in guiding people through fear and loss, dissociation, grief, and trauma. My approach is holistic and multidimensional, as I weave ancient philosophies, energetics, and metaphysics with modern quantum, epigenetic, and neurobiological sciences. I believe all ways we have adapted to survive are gifts we can creatively embrace.

The only way we know what happens in the world is through our senses. It's how we make sense of the world; it's how we can interact with the world. I use hypnosis to adjust this perception, to fine tune my clients' reality user-interface to allow them to experience a sense of comfort, confidence and especially control in improving their lives and getting them the things they both want and need. When we feel in control we can accomplish anything.

I specialize in work with individuals who experience Anxiety Disorders (OCD, General Anxiety, Phobias), Depression, Insomnia, Autism Spectrum Disorders as well as those with medical or complex presentations (e.g. depression and diabetes). I believe therapy must involve a human connection and have come to find a good sense of humor is critical to the work done in therapy. Without a strong therapeutic relationship, it is nearly impossible to make progress. However, within the context of a collaborative, supportive environment, CBT tools can be very useful. When CBT tools are not helpful, eccentric evidence-based practices may be.

Many of my clients would agree that what they look for in a counselor is someone who "has been there themselves." They look for someone that has the education and experience to successfully assist them. I have that combination of personal experiences and educational background. My goal is to help you feel better, cope with life, and get on the path to a more happy and productive life. I will teach you to identify, solve, and cope with problems. I am Psychedelic's friendly.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
