I practice a style of therapy, Gestalt Therapy, that is less talking about problems and more an active exploration of your experience in the world, with a strong emphasis on your embodied, somatic experience.
I wish to honor the struggle bringing you to therapy while holding the possibility for real, long lasting transformation. My intention is to create a space where you feel safe and capable of holding your experiences in new ways. From this space of self-acceptance, we will begin to explore the ways in which your natural expression has been distorted. In essence, you will recognize and work with the blocks limiting your life.

These include Eastern and Western philosophy, earth-based wisdom, existential-humanistic practices, somatic techniques, as well as systemic and relational frameworks.
Often, we are born into a world that defines us before we define ourselves, which can create a sense of disconnection from who we are. It is my belief that the exploration of Self is inextricably interwoven with the unfolding of our life. Many times, we are not taught how to be in relationship with ourself, as we would with a loved one, and therapy can offer a space to explore and get to know who we are, creating a deeper sense of connection with ourself and offer new perspectives of our role(s) in the world and in relationship to others.

I use an experiential approach in counseling, where we follow the thoughts, feelings, emotions, and sensations that are occurring in the present moment as the window to explore deeper held beliefs. Together, we explore what is at the core of these beliefs and find new ways of understanding and holding the experiences you have had, to bring forward an updated perspective that leads from your most authentic, empowered self. Most of my work draws from my training in The Hakomi Method of Mindful, Somatic Psychotherapy as well as psychodynamic theory, attachment theory, person-centered psychotherapy, depth psychology, and dreamwork.

I draw on a range of approaches including somatic (or body-awareness based) therapies and mindfulness.
Anxiety, depression, ADHD, or trauma make it so difficult to be present in your life. If you feel alternately numb, exhausted, or overwhelmed, I can help. Deepen your understanding of how your body holds stress and anxiety to learn new ways to respond. Addressing trauma and anxiety with body awareness helps to stop negative thoughts or a harsh inner narrative. Exploring your response to distress deepens your self-knowledge. We will use effective tools for holding overwhelming emotions in order to support you to feel grounded. With a foundation of self-trust and self-compassion, you feel more open to the possibilities of life.

I view therapy as a collaborative, unfolding process that considers clients holistically. I draw from feminist and somatic approaches, using mindfulness to help you reconnect with your centered-self, those around you, and broader structures of support and thriving. You can expect a safe and nonjudgmental space - I strive to incorporate anti-oppressive frameworks into my practice, attending to your social and cultural context. I believe that many challenges are related to structural violence and that we hold this trauma in our bodies. I enjoy helping clients tune into their embodied experience to release pain and find understanding.

I draw most heavily from internal family systems (IFS), attachment theory, polyvagal theory, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), somatic and mindfulness approaches, & feminist and anti-oppressive frameworks.
Hi, I'm Becca! I provide individual therapy to adults and teens ages 16+ who are experiencing grief and loss, relational challenges, stress, depression, anxiety, and the effects of trauma. I enjoy working with clients who are ready to dive deeper into exploring their relational and emotional patterns. Often the problems or "symptoms" we bring to therapy are protective adaptations that have helped us survive in past circumstances. Life can be much richer when we can recognize this and tell our story in a new way. I believe healing happens within warm, safe, & supportive relationships and it is my sincere hope to offer that to you.

I provide individual therapy from a humanistic, gestalt, and somatic approach.
I am currently open and accepting new clients. You may be struggling to adapt to changes in your life and feeling anxious, depressed, and lost. We all respond to challenges in creative ways, and these adaptations can make us less flexible, leading to difficulties in other areas. Perhaps this is impacting your relationships, including how you feel about yourself. You might be having difficulty understanding and expressing your thoughts and feelings. Sometimes it is hard to heal from the past, find comfort in the present, and choose a way forward. Therapy can help derive meaning from experience and discover a greater sense of purpose.

Alex is also trained in somatic work, and emphasizes "bottom-up", non-verbal expression such as art to help access and integrate core issues underlying psychological distress.
Alex is currently finishing his masters in Counseling Psychology at the University of Western States in Portland, OR. His primary research focus is on transpersonal experiences and psychedelic-assisted therapy. Alex's philosophy is one of organicity, meaning that every individual is gifted with an innate healing wisdom and capacity for wholeness. As a former earth scientist and active artist, Alex incorporates lessons from nature and creative expression in his work, and seeks to help others reconnect with the more subtle rhythms of psyche as a woven thread in the generative fabric of life.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
