I specialize in helping clients recover from complex trauma, and the behaviors that often go with it, such as self-harming, self-medicating, and a lack of self-compassion.
I am a licensed therapist (LPC) and I have been working in mental health in various roles since 2012. I have done a little bit of everything, including mobile crisis therapy out in the community with law enforcement and in ER’s, and this experience has given me a unique opportunity and ability to understand the needs and experiences of my clients.

These individuals are ready to engage in therapy actively, willing to explore their patterns and beliefs, and committed to their healing journey. Whether dealing with childhood wounds, relationship challenges, or professional stress, they're prepared to invest the necessary effort to create lasting positive change in their lives.

I see our work together as a team that balances putting in the hard work while understanding you have to have some laughs along the way! Above all modalities, the therapeutic relationship is what I value most in our work together. I primarily use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Art Therapy. Despite my degree in art therapy, my dual license allows me to provide more traditional talk therapy, too.

The greatest joy comes when clients break free of painful patterns and move to feeling comfortable with life. I've been a counselor for 30 years, with extensive experience helping those struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and addictions. Getting at underlying issues of shame, loss of control and grief changes lives. When therapy works there's more than just insight; clients feel it in their heart as well as their head. Those around them see that they have a life worth living with more happiness and better handling of the inevitable potholes.

Ever made to feel never enough? Do you fear how others would react if you were to make a mistake, share your authentic self, or reveal your family or relationship is not as picture perfect? Are you haunted by your past, worried about the future, or feel in some way “broken”? We all learn ways to cope when in an invalidating environment. Perhaps you are the supportive rock for your friends that believe you have it all together. Maybe you learned it was safest to be invisible, perfect, or take care of everyone but yourself. These strategies have at one time helped, but are now keeping you from living the life that you want.

At the heart of therapy is the soul. In my experience in counseling as participant and clinician, the question how do we address suffering and find meaning is of utmost importance. We all need connection in our stories, especially when facing hardship, pain, heartbreak, trauma, grief, loss, and broken relationships. Building rapport between you and I is of utmost importance to me. I will provide you a safe, secure, accepting, and curious space to explore where you want to take your next steps in this chapter of life. Let's explore how to find healing and to transform obstacles as a path to liberation instead of a detriment.

I help stressed, perfectionistic students and health care professionals learn how to relax. Too much self-control, or overcontrol, makes it hard to enjoy life and connect meaningfully with others. It’s exhausting to feel like you’re always ‘on’, performing, or wearing a mask. Overcontrol can lead to anxiety, depression, disordered eating, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and intimacy avoidance. You don’t have to struggle alone–I’ve been a therapist helping LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and other folx get unstuck for over 10 years.

You hold a unique process of transformation within. Yet becoming your authentic self in the world can be deeply challenging. You may feel stuck, disconnected, and weighed down by something you can’t quite name. A part of you longs for change, yet the way forward feels unclear. I work with teens and adults helping them understand their emotions, build resilience, and reconnect with what feels true and whole. Using a compassionate, creative approach, I support those facing personal growth challenges, early life trauma, stressful and overwhelming experiences, and mood disorders.

I see individuals, couples and families who are seeking support for things they feel are not going well in their lives. From the Family Systems perspective, any number of issues can be looked at together. My work is centered around interpersonal relationships and how we interact with each other, our selves and our communities. Relationship dynamics are constantly in and out of balance. Managing these relationships is key in helping develop healthy ways of dealing with life issues. The work we do together should feel helpful and focused on your goals.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
