I provide support to new couples experiencing the beginning and post stages of pregnancy .
I have worked with individuals experiencing trauma for five years within a community health setting. For the past five years I have specialized to treat members and their families who are enduring hardships with mental health and substance use disorders. Many of my clients came from diverse family, cultural, and gender communities; and all of my clients had experienced homelessness, abuse from childhood, and/or domestic violence. I hope to treat everyone I encounter with a trauma informed approach, which understands that anyone and everyone experiences trauma on some level in their life.

My background includes specialized training in perinatal ( pregnancy and postpartum ) mental health.
Are you feeling challenged by motherhood? As a therapist who specializes in maternal mental health, I help you process and cope with the stress, anxiety, and overwhelm that surfaces during the parenting years. Relationship concerns, career transitions, exceptional children, even coping with loneliness are all common counseling topics. With very little time to process complex feelings, these issues can lead to anxiety, ambivalence, anger, even grief. I give women the space to explore their very real feelings, while fostering confidence in, and compassion for, themselves through this intense season of life.

I have specific experience working with people who have a history of complex trauma; folks in pregnancy , birth, and postpartum transitions; those experiencing intimate partner violence; queer, trans, gender non-conforming and questioning people; individuals and relationships who are non-monogamous; and those dealing with the impacts of oppression.
I view therapy as a collaborative, unfolding process that considers clients holistically. I draw from feminist and somatic approaches, using mindfulness to help you reconnect with your centered-self, those around you, and broader structures of support and thriving. You can expect a safe and nonjudgmental space - I strive to incorporate anti-oppressive frameworks into my practice, attending to your social and cultural context. I believe that many challenges are related to structural violence and that we hold this trauma in our bodies. I enjoy helping clients tune into their embodied experience to release pain and find understanding.

I have training and experience treating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, relationship issues, issues related to identity, perinatal mood disorders, issues related to reproduction and parenting.
There are as many reasons to seek therapy as there are people. No matter your specific reason, you are probably here because you are struggling with something that matters to you a great deal. I view my role as a therapist as understanding alongside you what is getting in the way of living a more satisfying life, making sense of how you came to be where you are now, and identifying together in what ways you would like to make changes. I see therapy as a relational process intended to help people increase their self-awareness, self-compassion, and self-efficacy.

Pregnancy and childbirth can be filled with excitement, but it can also be a time of anxiety, stress, sadness, fear, and panic. Maybe something just doesn't feel quite right. Maybe you feel completely overwhelmed. Perhaps you and your partner just can't seem to get on the same page. Anxiety, depression, irritability, and rage during pregnancy and after childbirth can be alarming, but it is not uncommon. The good news is, these are treatable conditions. I understand you want the best for your child and might feel like you aren't able to provide what they need. We can work together to change that.

In our work we will talk about the highs and lows of the perinatal period. You will get to say out loud, the things so many women are thinking and feeling but so few are saying. Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
