Granite Bridges can work with you if your family: has done office-based family therapies and found the work to be too sporadic and superficial for lasting change, has difficulty communicating and connecting, fights frequently or isolates separately, is struggling with a manipulative teen, needs help with parenting , would like to do work outside with less distractions or who want to do more intense work quickly (NOT typical in-office therapy).

EVERYONE NEEDS A COACH. Everyone faces challenges for which they are not adequately prepared at some point in life: an executive leadership position, a career change or retirement, a creative block, difficulties forming or sustaining a romantic relationship, the complexities of parenting , divorce, or disability. We usually expect ourselves to just do whatever needs to be done, on our own. That attitude often leads to unanticipated hardships and difficulties, which could be avoided by seeking the appropriate counsel.

Our work together will lead to fewer meltdowns and increased delight and joy in the parent -child relationship.
I work with parents who are struggling to create/maintain boundaries, feel like they are running on empty, and are not enjoying their caregiving or parenting role. The parents I work with want support with how to support their child's emotional needs while maintaining developmentally appropriate and informed boundaries on behaviors. I offer consultation related to in-home and school behaviors, and can provide access or referrals to resources if children are in need of ongoing therapeutic, psychiatric, or behavioral supports which are outside of my scope of practice, including psychiatric care, or Austism or ADHD assessments.

Being an adoptee, a mom, and a step parent myself, I feel passionate about the connections I make to help families have stronger relationships.
I have two specialties, working with children and parents through adoption issues and working with children whose parents are experiencing separation and divorce. As a certified adoption specialist, I help adoptive parents and adopted children navigate through the developmental stages adoption brings. I also assist birth parents and adult adoptees through the complexities of search and reunion issues so they can complete their stories and find healing.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
